John Constantine has had a banner year. His eponymous comic has started off to rave reviews, and his sadly cancelled television series has already become a cult classic. The show Constantine, starring Matt Ryan as Newcastle’s most devious mage, was kept in a bad time slot and seemed doom from the start when NBC made it a 13 episode season. However, fans have been hoping and dreaming that Ryan’s Constantine would show up elsewhere. Rumors have been flying for ages that Constantine would pop up on Arrow’s upcoming fourth season.
This time, unlike many rumors of the past, this one came true. In an announcement at The CW’s Television Critics Association presentation, CW President Mark Pedowitz announced John Constantine would be coming to Arrow for an episode, with Matt Ryan returning to a role he now can truly call his own. The one shot episode, Episode 405 titled “Haunted”, will be a one shot appearance by the wily mage which the CW describes as “a weather-worn exorcist and expert on the supernatural and the occult. He is a detective, magician, and a hunter of demons, and will provide critical support to Oliver (Stephen Amell) when arrows aren’t enough.”
Marc Guggenheim, Arrow’s showrunner said “We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of ‘Arrow.’ Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to ‘Arrow’ and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the ‘Constantine’ fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series.”
Ryan took to Twitter with a video message for his fans:

After Constantine was cancelled, many hoped The CW, with their hit Supernatural, would pick up the series. While CW ultimately passed, Arrow‘s writers wanted to bring him into their universe. “It would be wonderful and we certainly have a million ideas — it’s hard for me to say mainly because A: it’s not my decision to make and B: with ‘Constantine’ being shopped around to other networks… it’s really hard to make plans when a show’s kind of in limbo” said Guggenheim at the time. In another interview with Variety, Guggenheim stated that the writers’ room had numerous ideas on how to bring the wily wizard to Arrow.
With Ryan’s Constantine back on the screen, albeit for one show, is there hope for his own show? Perhaps not; but it shows that Constantine, and Ryan, still have a place in the DC Universe. It also infers that the episodes of the Constantine series could possibly be considered canon in the DC Television Universe.
Arrow returns October 7th, at 8pm.
