Be sure to check back every week to catch some up and coming new cosplay talent or get a look at some well established and already famous members from the world of cosplay.
My real name is Derek May. I cook for a living at Universal Studios. I am 22 years old, live in Orlando, and attend the University of Central Florida for my bachelors in Hospitality Administration.
How did you first get into cosplay? I first got into cosplay when me and my roommate used to people watch whenever DragonCon came into town when we lived in Atlanta. Seeing all of these amazing costumes inspired me to finally embrace my true geek and enter the hobby. My first cosplay I had someone commissioned for it, and then I finally built my own cosplay, which was Commander Shepard’s N7 armor.
How much time do you spend making your costumes? When I was making Shepard, it took about 4 months total to do it, working on it 4 days a week anywhere from 2-10 hour days. Doing Kohta was 2 weeks with 3 hour sessions.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far? Renegade Commander Shepard. I love getting into the character and putting on those scars.
Do you usually get positive reactions from fans? Yes! Especially on the weathering job I did on my armor. Except for a couple of trolls, everyone has given me nothing but praise for my work.
What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for? I plan on doing an Attack on Titan cosplay as my next project, followed by Sektor from Mortal Kombat. I want both done for next years MegaCon.
What characters inspire you the most? Commander Shepard definitely inspires me. The freedom of choice was always my favorite freedom, and he personifies that. I am also a huge fan of The Doctor, 4th, 5th, and 10th incarnations to be precise.
