Be sure to check back every week to catch some up and coming new cosplay talent or get a look at some well established and already famous members from the world of cosplay.
Candy L. Keane started Three Muses Inspired Clothing in 2005 as a way of turning her passion for costuming into a career. Since then her costumes and cosplay photos have been featured in movies, TV, magazines, books and online. She not only makes the costumes, but also does her hair, make-up and special fx (horns, ears, etc.) to go with each outfit. In 2009 she opened a retail location in Jacksonville, FL featuring her own handmade items, plus retail brands and items by local artists. Candy continues to share her love of costuming with people all over the world through her boutique website ThreeMusesClothing.com and by dressing up at numerous events and conventions throughout the year.
How did you first get into cosplay? I’ve always been into Halloween. I got into conventions and cosplay when I found out I don’t have to wait all year anymore to dress up. Now because I own a costume shop, I’ll dress up any chance I get. So all year long it’s conventions and theme events. It’s easier for me to find a costume to wear than a normal dress. Also because most of my normal dresses are covered with skulls and bats, lol.
How much time do you spend making your costumes? I make costumes 24-7, so I’ve never sat down and tried to figure out how many hours went into each outfit. While something is drying on one thing, I can be working on something else. So there are always multiple projects. Some stuff takes 3 days, other thing take 3 months if they give me a hard time or I have to order pieces for it.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far? Aeon Flux (from the animated collection, not the movie). I was in a bad car accident and when I got out of the hospital I only weighed 100 lbs, and I’m 5’9″. I did not feel very good about my skeletal appearance. I was watching Aeon Flux and started thinking, she looks kind of scary, like all wirey muscle. I started thinking I could totally pull that off and make the weirdness work for me. So I did! I won 5 costume contests in that outfit. I did manage to level out at a more normal weight range, but I think that’s a little bit of the magic of costuming you can make your weirdness work for you no matter what issue you have with your body.
Do you usually get positive reactions from fans? Yes! I really enjoy meeting people at the conventions and events and everyone has always been very positive in person.
What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for? DragonCon! I’ve got 5 costumes lined up, but I always seem to bring one more than I end up wearing.Hoping to get them all in this year.
After that it’s WasabiCon, which is Nov. 2-3 here in Jacksonville, FL. I’ll be a cosplay guest at that one.
What characters inspire you the most? Wonder Woman is the character I have worn and made the most. I love that she has so many outfits! And Harley Quinn is also a favorite.
