Apologies for our weekly cosplay feature being late…things happen. This week we have our first cosplayer duo. This couple hails from the Netherlands and we have to say that this guy is the best Heath Ledger Joker lookalike we’ve ever seen. Nicole Schalkwijk and René Dur are one helluva Harley and Joker.
How did you first get into cosplay? I always liked dressing up. I was the biggest fan of Halloween and themed parties. The Harley suit I bought for fun when I was on holiday. I was going to use it for the next Halloween party. I always wanted to be her, because I love her innocent but deadly nature. This cosplay is actually my first official cosplay. Once I had a taste of it, I wanted to keep creating costumes and I made plans to do more.
How much time do you spend making your costumes? The preparing and thinking up a plan takes the longest. Luckily we know someone who can sew really well. We take our time to discuss the costume and the fit. After that we have to find the right fabric and look for the perfect accessories to go with the costume. A complete costume could take up to half a year.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far? My first official cosplay was Harley. But before that I dressed up as Morticia Addams for a masquerade in town. I couldn’t walk in the tight dress, but I loved it so much!
Do you usually get positive reactions from fans? As far as I know, yes. It surprised me in a good way that people think you really ARE the character. Someone at a convention came up to me to proudly show his Harley merchandise he bought. Others are so eager to take a picture with you that they are actually trembling when they ask you. I really like those moments and I think that’s what makes cosplay even more fun.
What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for? Again Harley. This time Arkham Asylum for the F.A.C.T.S convention in Belgium. After that I’m going for Catwoman inspired by the long Halloween comic. I have too many plans.
How did you first get into cosplay? I got into cosplaying because I created a short film about The Joker for a school project. I played The Joker myself and I was also the director. After that I liked it so I decided I wanted to do more with it.
How much time do you spend making your costumes? It depends on the costume, I created an Arkham Asylum Jumpsuit and that was done in about two days because I only had to do the logo. But now I’m creating the official purple suit and that takes up a lot of time. Looking for the right fabrics and stuff like that. I also want to do my own version of a Batman cosplay and the designing takes up a lot of time.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far? The Joker is really the only one I’ve done so far. He has a special place in my heart and I know I can do so much cosplays but I will always love being The Joker.
Do you usually get positive reactions from fans? Yes, and it’s really funny because a lot of people I know don’t know that I cosplay. And when we are discussing it I show them a picture of me as the Heath Ledger Joker and they can’t seem to see that’s me and not Heath. Apparently I look a lot like him, and people all over the internet say that as well and to me that is the best compliment I can get.
What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for? I am preparing for my first official Con Cosplay as Joker for F.A.C.T.S in Belgium. After that I’ve got so many ideas that I want to do. Like my own version of Batman or Arrow from the TV show.
