This week’s cosplay is from Mowse. She answered our call for great cosplayers and did not disappoint. Her love of video games and cosplay comes out in this series inspired by Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. There is a link below to her Facebook page where you can see more of her Jedi cosplay.
I am an aspiring author and musician. I also love to do photography, and shoot self portraits with a fantasy twist. I primarily shoot landscape, but have done some portraiture. I love video games, music, fantasy and science fiction. Every Friday I get together with my best friend and we spend all night watching the science channel. Star Wars is one of my favorite movie sagas, and therefore the reason I chose to jump into the cosplay scene starting there.
How did you first get into cosplay? I always really enjoyed dressing up – I made a ninja costume in high school and wore it every Halloween, and to a few conventions. I also had a Sheena Fujibayashi from Tales of Symphonia costume at some point (lol), but thankfully there are no pictures to prove that. It wasn’t until Star Wars Celebration V in 2010 that I really decided to make a costume for an actual character in great detail, to represent a series and character that I really liked, and hopefully provide a fan service to those who could appreciate it.
How much time do you spend making your costumes? I’m not exactly sure how many work hours went into finishing the costume, but between gathering supplies, planning out the look, and putting it together, it took about 3 months from start to finish.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far? The only true cosplay I have done has been Atris, from Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. I plan to eventually make more costumes of characters I really love, but I think Atris is always going to be my main one.
Do you usually get positive reactions from fans? Yes, and it’s really awesome! Atris is not a very well liked character in the game, and she isn’t technically a main character – somewhat of a minor villain, so it’s always really cool when people shout out “Oh wow, Atris!” and ask to have a picture, or comment on how nice my costume is. Being told my costume is really true to the character is the best compliment I could receive. There are a lot of beautiful women out there who do cosplay and show off a bit more skin, but the reason I love Atris so much is because she is a beautiful character, who can be fully clothed, and still elicit a positive reaction from fans.
What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for? I am really excited and looking forward to the next Celebration. Before that, however, I will be attending the Tampa Bay Comic Con at the end of August, and I’m really stoked for that. Before now, I have only really gone to the two Celebrations here in Orlando, and Megacon, so this will be branching out a bit for me.
What characters inspire you the most? In general? Characters that struggle through adversity to reach their goals. Characters that have a troubled, dark past, that try to make the best of their situations and be a better person. In that regard – Batman is my favorite all time character of any story ever. It’s funny, because I chose Atris to cosplay as, yet she is none of those things – a sad, bitter old woman, suffering from the delusion of being everything she idolizes, yet in truth is the complete antithesis. She lets her feelings of betrayal shape who she is, and ultimately, it brings her to darkness. But I guess I just like a character with a lot of personality, and emotional reasons for the way they are.
