About Arya Riverfall

My name is Arianna, I’m 21 and I’m from Rome. I study in Naples Medicine and Surgery in english language. I’m just a regular girl trying to have fun in the cosplay world. I also like to draw, I like photography and I try to travel and see things around me as much as I can.

Arya Riverfall

How did you first get into cosplay?

I started back in 2010 due to my passion for manga, japan, and anime. After few years I lost my passion for Japan and with that, I lost also interest for the cosplay world. Now I’m back in the game, and I tend to dress as characters from movies, comics, and TV series.

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I cosplay for fun because as a med student I don’t have that much time to invest in my hobbies.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I prefer to make my cosplays from scratch, and actually, I think that’s the funniest part, it really helps me getting in the character. But many times I don’t have the time or the skills that some costumes require, so I have to buy them.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

It really depends on the cosplay. For example, it took me 2 weeks to get ready as Wonder Woman because I made all the costume by myself.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

Definitely, Wonder Woman, but I think this will change very soon.

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

Well, I was at a Con, in Rome, and one kid who was dressed up as Superman stopped me and asked me: “Will you be my Wonder Woman?” He was very sweet, I will never forget that.

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I don’t really know since I’ve never been part of one.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I’ve almost finished my cosplay of Katniss Everdeen, Lara Croft, Harry Potter gender bend and also Harley Quinn from Injustice 2.

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

I think there’s lots of envy among cosplayers and I really hate this. Also, many times people tend to forget that cosplaying must be first of all a fun experience.
I also don’t like all the body shaming, many think that if you’re not as thin as the character you want to cosplay, you cannot do it. This is ridiculous!

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

I’ll have to say characters from Game of Thrones and fantasy novels in generals and super-heroines ( they have the best costumes! )

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

My favourite part is actually none of these. It’s when you have finished your costume and you try it on together with makeup to see the final result before shooting or attending a con.

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

I must say Amazon, Aliexpress and some specialized shops in my hometown.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

I think it was accepting my body. Accepting that it is flawed and not perfect as I’d want it to be and that it’s okay like it is.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

I think I have learned not to judge anyone because even though a cosplayer may look pretty mediocre to you, you never know how much he/she has worked on her costume or her makeup. How much sacrifice did he/she put in it? We should never judge someone else’s work.

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Live and let live! Try your best in realizing your cosplays and have fun, don’t get envious or judgmental of any other cosplayer.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

I feel that now there are tons of cosplayers whereas before there were way fewer… Even so I don’t see big differences. There’s always been envy among different cosplayers.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?

I’d love to cosplay Iron Man.

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

I don’t. This doesn’t mean that money is not an issue for me, it just means that I always try to achieve the better result I can with a reasonable budget.

What does cosplay mean to you?

It means to press pause from real life. It gives me satisfaction and is something I can get some relax from.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

I think I would stop for total lack of time. Nothing else.
