How did you first get into cosplay?

I’ve always loved dressing in costumes. I started cosplaying at a time when I was juggling motherhood, a full-time job and planning a wedding and I needed an outlet.

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I started cosplaying for fun, but it is definitely a big part of my career at this point.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

A majority of my costumes are made mostly from scratch, but with time being tight this year, I plan on commissioning a lot of costumes.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

Like many cosplayers, I’m a procrastinator! I end up making most of my costumes within the few hours I have available the week of the con.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

That is a loaded question! I have over 70 costumes at this point, but I think my favorite is one of my first costumes. Catwoman is an iconic costume for me and definitely a character I love to portray.

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

Surprisingly, a lot of my fans are kids. At my very first guest appearance at a con, I met a little girl and gave her a signed print of my Catwoman costume. The next time I saw her she was wearing her very first costume, a Catwoman costume. Her mother told me that she keeps my picture in her room and only wanted to cosplay Catwoman because of me.

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I love group cosplays! The more cosplayers, the more magic. They are difficult to pull off, but when they work, THEY WORK!!

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I am working on Shuri, Black Panther’s sister, this year and I am so hype!

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

One of this biggest issues in the cosplay community is the lack of diversity. I am a big advocate for diversity and it hurts me to see how often people of different races and body types are bullied in the cosplay community.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

Villains! As much as I love heroes, villains have all the best costumes!

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

My favorite part of cosplay is getting into character. How often do you get to dress and act like someone else?

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Amazon is the first place I look for cosplay materials. Some people are also surprised to hear that Good Will and the Dollar Store are amazing places to search for cheap material options.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

My biggest obstacle has probably been myself. Like most cosplayers, I am my biggest critic, but getting over confidence issues definitely makes a big difference in your overall presence.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

So many! But the biggest lesson I learned is to be yourself!

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Stay true to who you are! If you’re afraid to cosplay a character, because they don’t look like you or they are not a popular character, don’t let that get you down! Cosplay is about sharing your love and passion for your fandom! Stay true to you!

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

One major change I’ve noticed in the cosplay community is that diversity is becoming more popular! With big movements like #28daysofblackcosplay and #blackcosplayersrock , diversity is busting its way into cosplay and I’m so happy about it!!

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Sergeant Calhoun from Wreck it Ralph

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

No- I mostly just try to be as cheap as possible while trying to make a costume that looks expensive.

What does cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay is life. Cosplay is love. I grew up being bullied for being a nerd and cosplay is my comeback! I am so happy to show and share my love for the characters, the writing, the art- every bit of my nerdom is in this.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
