About Chickadee Cosplay
My name is MacKenzie Smith AKA Chickadee Cosplay, I’m 25 almost 26 and I’m really into super girly animes, haha.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I was brought up in a theater family so I’ve always really been big into costumes and then I started going to conventions and I was hooked!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
For now, it’s just for fun! I’ve always wanted to be a model though so I’m really into the photo shoot aspect of cosplaying.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I prefer to make my own.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It depends on the complexity of the costume I guess! Most of the time it’s on and off for a few months.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
I would have to say my favorite is my Big Sister from Bioshock cosplay! It was time consuming but also my first time making armor so it was a huge challenge!
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
I remember the first time I wore Big Sister, I had a speaker in the bottom of the tank on her back, and I walked down a lonnnng hallway full of people while my husband walked behind me playing her sound clips from the game. It was surreal to see everyone staring at me and running in front of me to take my picture.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love them! They’re always super impressive looking! 🙂
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I have a couple in the works, but I don’t like to name them before they’re done just in case I don’t end up finishing them, haha.
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I try my hardest to stay out of cosplay drama, but I see a lot of comments on people’s weight or race not being ‘true’ to whatever the character may be? My personal opinion is that cosplay is for fun and no one should be looked down upon because of their physical appearance for any reason!
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I’m huge into anime but I tend to be more into video game character designs.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
Definitely attending the cons and photoshoots!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I always try to look locally for whatever fabric I might need first (I always like to see things in person first) and I always try to get my wigs from Arda (Their quality is always really good)
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
I think my biggest obstacle has had to be motivation while making cosplays? I tend to get a little lazy, haha.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Throughout my years cosplaying, I’ve met some amazing people and learned some awesome techniques for crafting. I think all of it, in general, has helped me grow and gain confidence!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
A good makeup job can REALLY complete the look!
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
For me, it hasn’t really changed! It’s been a constant stream of friends and shenanigans!
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I would cosplay C3PO from Star Wars! I am seriously his biggest fan, haha.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
What does cosplay mean to you?
It gives me confidence and a creative outlet and it’s made me a family of awesome people that you couldn’t dream up!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Time and motivation.
