About EV Cosplay
EV Cosplay. You can call me EV! I live in the Chicago Suburbs and I’ve been cosplaying for a little more than a year. I love making detail-rich cosplays and putting a fresh spin on things!
How did you first get into cosplay?
A friend dressed me up for the Renaissance Faire and I loved it!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I love making costumes, but I think it would be very stressful to do as a full-time career! I usually find creative design choices to hide any mistakes that I made that I would worry that people that commissioned from me wouldn’t like!
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I prefer to make my cosplays from base materials when I can by modifying existing clothing to fit my needs. When I can’t find something to modify I will typically make it myself via sewing, embroidery, foam work, or 3d printing!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It depends on the build. For big builds, this is typically 3-4 months. If it’s a smaller build it takes 2-3 weeks!
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
Getting to compete in the Crown Championships of Cosplay at C2E2 this year! I got to meet so many amazing cosplayers and I was blown away by their work. It inspired me to make so many more amazing things! There is truly no limit to what you can make!
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I like them! I got to participate in a DC photoshoot last year and really enjoyed hanging out with my fellow cosplayers. We still have a group chat going to keep in touch!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I’m hoping to finish Katarina from League of Legends and to make a Nuka Cola girl!
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I haven’t really been involved in any divisive issues.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I absolutely adore strong female characters who kick ass!
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
My favorite part is when your cosplay is mostly completed and you try it on for the first time and start to feel like your character. It’s especially awesome when you’ve made it yourself!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I tend to get my fabric from Joann’s since it’s relatively close by! I’ve also ordered EVA foam from The Foamery and been very happy with it.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Finishing cosplays when something doesn’t work. It can get incredibly frustrating to make the same piece over and over again a different way to try to achieve success!
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
If at first you don’t succeed, watch a different tutorial before trying again!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Be kind to other people and learn from them! Most cosplayers are happy to share tips.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
I’ve only been cosplaying for a little over a year. I feel like the community has been extremely welcoming and cosplayers take great care of each other at Cons!
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Wonder Woman’s Golden Armor wings from WW 1984!
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
For small builds, yes. For large builds that I intend to compete in that span for a long time, it can be hard to track.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Getting to be your favorite character for however long you’re in cosplay. It’s empowering to go out there and have people recognize you as your character!
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
I see it continuing to be awesome and continuing to grow.
What is your favorite con to attend?
Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?
I adore @paisleyandglue and @eveillecosplay ! My friend @elemental.cosplay is also a real-life superhero and does a ton of volunteer work. She’s inspiring to get me involved as well!
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
Not really? I’d be delighted to find out that I had inspired someone.
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
Always ask before taking the picture! If cosplayers are talking to other people or have bits of their costume off to eat or drink wait a few minutes before asking.
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
I’m doing this for fun and I feel incredibly grateful that some people on the internet are interested in seeing my work!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Lack of time or lack of funds. I’m very fortunate to have both right now, but I realize that that could change at any time.
