About Hitode Cosplay
Hi! My name is Andrea but everyone knows me as Hitode Cosplay. I’m 22 years old and I live in Barcelona, Spain. I’m a biologist but also a crafts lover so cosplay is my perfect hobby! I love video games and some animes. I have a dance group called Project Kirara and we dance to LoveLive and other Japanese Idols music
How did you first get into cosplay?
I was visiting my first Con (that was back in 2014) and I saw all that people wearing amazing princess dresses, insane armours, and weapons that were bigger than them. I then become interested in cosplay and did my first cosplay in 2015
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
For me, it’s just a fun thing because my professional life is focused on what I’ve studied at University (Biology). Even if I’m not really famous (not even in my country) I’ve been invited to a couple of cons. That’s a lot of fun and selling prints too but what I like the most it’s just to have fun and meet new people rather than thinking about the money
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I always do my cosplays from scratch because then I love them even more and what’s more important: I learn new techniques! However, I sometimes buy things and modify them later. But that doesn’t mean I don’t buy cosplays! I actually have 2 bought cosplays from the Love Live anime series.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It actually depends.. if its something simple like a Sailor Moon dress it can take less than a month (but I’m so slow at making patterns and sewing so it actually takes ages to me hahaha). But if it’s something with armour or big props… it can take more than 3 months
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
Hard question here hahaha I think that Dragon Trainer Tristana, from League of Legends
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
I will explain two of my best experiences I had with cosplay: – The first one is related to my favourite cosplay, Tristana. It was my second big project and I won the first prize at a Con in Barcelona. I couldn’t believe it! From that moment on, all my cosplayer friends or “fans” ask for that cosplay if I’m not wearing it. They even call me Tristana instead of my real name hahaha – And the second experience is related to my Love Live cosplay and dance group. We used to dance in small con and events and back in November we were given the opportunity to dance in the biggest Con in Spain. The stage was enormous, we had 2 giant screens on each side of the stage and the public was dancing and singing with us. It was incredible and lots of fun!
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I’m okay with them but I try to look for responsible people that really want to be part of the group and don’t quit before the con
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I actually don’t have a closed cos-plan for this year… but I’m fixing my Garuda (Final Fantasy XIV) for March and also working on Xayah from League of Legends
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I’m actually a “live and let live” person. I know there are lots of topics that divide cosplay community but for me if it’s something that makes you happy and proud just don’t listen to the rest of the world because there will always be someone that will judge and criticise you for everything.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I love video games more than anime. Sagas like Final Fantasy are the ones that inspire me the most because they have cute characters but also big weapons that are challenging for me.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I love the painting process of armours and props! But of course, my favourite part is attending a con with my brand new cosplay and take some pictures with people around there
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
There’s a big shop in Barcelona that has EVA foam, paints, insulation foam… For worbla I normally buy it online
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
SPACE! I’m struggling with space cause I have big props that can’t be kept in my closet so they are all around my house
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
I actually don’t remember anything…
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Respect, be kind and don’t give up! Don’t stop trying and you will soon become a real super-cosplayer!
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
I’ve just been in the cosplay community for 2 years so I can’t tell much
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Mmmm… I would love to do Bahamut from Final Fantasy X
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Not really, I actually love recycling things so my cosplays can be a lot cheaper than expected
What does cosplay mean to you?
It means having fun in a unique way, it means effort and pride
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Work and money are the biggest factors here. However, I wouldn’t stop doing small cosplays (instead of making big armor ones)
