Cosplayer Spotlight – Io sono Cosplay

Word of the Nerd is pleased to present to you one of our most popular features, Cosplayer Spotlight.  We feature new and talented cosplayers from the cosplay community.  Be sure to check back every Tuesday and Thursday to catch some up and coming new cosplay talent or get a look at some well established and famous members of the cosplay universe.

About Io sono Cosplay

We are two Italian cosplayers (from Rome). Our names are Serena and Patrizia aka Io sono Cosplay, we are 25 years old. Serena works as a film editor, Patrizia works as a nurse. We are very different but cosplay unites us. 💕 We do couple cosplay, we like to create the character design, build and sew the cosplay and see how it takes shape. 💪🏻

How did you first get into cosplay?

Old friendships took us to a cartoon fair and it was love at first sight!

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

For the moment it is just fun, it is very difficult to make a career with cosplay but we would love it ❤️

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

The most beautiful thing we like about cosplay is to make our own cosplay! We like to create them from scratch, from design to final assembly 😍

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

It depends on the cosplay, it usually takes about 3 months. However, we did simple cosplay in 2 weeks and very complicated in 6 months.

What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?

Our favorite cosplay we’ve done is the very first couple cosplay we’ve done, Kindred of League Of Legends. We love it soooo much! ☯️😍

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

The best moment that happens to us at the fair is when the children recognize your cosplay and come running to hug you. It is a magical moment!

How do you feel about group cosplays?

We often found ourselves well in cosplay groups, we all share the same passion and we make many positive friends!

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

This year we started working on our first Original (our personal version of the Sun and Moon), unfortunately then there was a health emergency and it got us a bit stuck … luckily we are fine but we hope to resume soon!

What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

In our opinion, the most common problems are not taking cosplayers too seriously. very often they are classified as “big kids” who don’t want to grow up and dress up. Many people don’t understand that cosplay is a 360-degree art! It takes a lot of time, energy, passion, and money to be a cosplayer, and many sacrifices are also made to continue this passion.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

We are two friends of the same age who share the same passion and always do a couples cosplay, we are inspired by very opposite characters. We did for example the cosplay Night Fury and Light Fury of How To Train Your Dragon …🐲💕

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

We LOVE the part of cosplay design! ❤️ We like all parts, we like to see how cosplay takes shape slowly in our hands. And of course, we also love the satisfaction of a successful photo that highlights all our work!

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

We have a trusted shop for fabrics. We buy the rest on the internet, following the various offers 😏

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

There are no big obstacles to overcome, everyone can cosplay if they want! In general, you have to be prepared to make sacrifices to move forward. Cosplay is suffering but it’s also wonderful!💖

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

One thing we learned by going to the fair is to respect everyone, many treat you badly regardless, just because they are altered for their reasons. Everyone has their problems, but we still have to respect each other.

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

NEVER give weight to the opinions of others! Cosplay is a free expression, it must not be contaminated by the opinions of others.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

We believe that cosplay is becoming fashionable lately, this on the one hand is positive because it makes this art known to more people. But on the other hand, it is negative because it is causing the cosplay to lose weight…

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

At least 1 cosplay per month! 😍

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

Generally, not, we put some money aside and when we get the right idea for a cosplay we already have a small budget to use!

What does cosplay mean to you?

Art, fun without judgments, and freedom of expression.

How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?

Difficult to say … surely it will have become a much better-known phenomenon! We hope that the carefree world that we love so much remains.

What is your favorite con to attend?

Lucca Comics & Games

Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?

We follow a lot Kamui Cosplay, she is adorable and very good at giving advice!

Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?

Inspiration is a big word! We feel good when we cosplay and I think this is perceived by others. 🌸This is the great power of cosplay!

What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?

Always ask for permission, be kind, and always thank. We are not dolls, we have feelings, and being kind never hurts. 😉

What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?

They often ask us where we got our cosplay, and we always explain that it is we who create them from scratch. We would like others to know us as a designer and cosplayer. 💪🏻✨

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Dor the moment nothing, we hope to stop as late as possible!
