About Maike

Hello, my name is Maike and I´m a cosplayer from Germany. I´m 18 years old and I cosplay for 2 years now. ^-^

Daedric from Skyrim

How did you first get into cosplay?

I watched a lot of anime and played some games, that was how I get to know the world of cosplay and one day my friend and I talked about cosplay. It was really a surprise because we didn`t know that we both like these things. That was the reason why we made our first cosplay. ^-^

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I would love to be a professional cosplayer in the future, but I do it for fun too. The cosplay community is just awesome and I like to be a part of it.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I do all my cosplays by myself and love to help my friends if they need help.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

For my biggest project, I spend about 2 and a half month and for my smallest like 2 weeks.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

My favourite is my Daedric cosplay from Skyrim. It was my biggest project so far and it was inspired by KamuiCosplay. It was fun to make and a real challenge, because of the different materials that I used. To see the result and the comparison to the Daedric from KamuiCosplay was really awesome for me.

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

My first convention was also the first time I cosplayed. It was a real experience to met so many people from the community and get to know so many ways of cosplay. 😀

How do you feel about group cosplays?

Group cosplays are a great way to spend time with your friends or other people, who like the same as you. I don´t make a group cosplay yet but I would like to do it someday.

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

Currently, I’m making Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy XII. I will wear it to the next con so I have to be ready in some weeks. For the rest of the year, I don´t have plans but I will do some again if I find some good characters I like. ^-^

What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

I think some cosplayers think that only being the best is the real thing if you cosplay. I didn´t notice it so far but I heard about it.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

For me, all character designs from anime, manga, games, etc. are inspiring because of the variation from each of them.

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

My favourite part is crafting, photo shoots and attending cons. Every part has something special I love. 😀

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

I use for most of my cosplays Worbla or Eva. It´s easy to handle and you have great results.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

The biggest obstacle for me is the money. Many materials are very expensive, but I´m looking for cheaper materials to work with.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

I have learned a lot by cosplaying for example how to use different materials in different ways, how to paint materials, how to sew and just be self-confident and proud of what you love. ^-^

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Don´t be sad if your first cosplay is not that good as others. Everyone has to grow in the things they do.

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

Because I cosplay just for about 2 years I don´t know, but I heard that the cosplay community has grown very much.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

That is a hard question. °-° I think I don´t have that number one cosplay I would like to make. I would just do a cosplay for a character I like at the moment.

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

Happily, I can say no. XD

What does cosplay mean to you?

Cosplay is for me a way to express myself and my skills.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Maybe at the end of the world…but just maybe. XD
