About Miya “Miyavimaru” Young

My real name is Anastasia but i prefer to use my nickname Miya Young.  I’m 23 yo,from Astrakhan (small city in Russia).  Dreaming to travel in USA and Japan

How did you first get into cosplay?

I started to cosplay in the end of 2011. My friends invite me to a cosplay party and I like the process. Of course, it was my first cosplay and quality wasn’t very good but I like it because it was the first step in cosplay.

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

Now I do cosplay for fun but who knows maybe one day I start to be popular cosplay model 🙂

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I prefer to do cosplay by hybrid way and don’t see a problem in it. I can see many masters who do their works very amazing and I know that I can’t do such. So I better buy it to do my cosplay looks better.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

It consists of character which I want to cosplay. It can be 1-2 weeks or months.

What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?

It’s Harley Quinn and Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

All cosplayers are human. Even they cosplays have professional level they also need a little help on conventions

How do you feel about group cosplays?

Why not? It’s good that some people like fandom like you. I dream to do a group cosplay on Marvel and DC characters

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I work on Spider-Gwen cosplay and LadyBug

What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

A sense of grandeur. I saw many cosplayers who raises their levels in cosplay and speak not very politely with newbies in cosplay

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

They are different. Can’t say that I can unite them. I just watch on character and in mi head ring a bell “hell yeah!this is my character!” XD

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

I like photo shoots the most. It’s like a little magic. And like to work with photographer which interested in result /not making only money for shoot/ Like to make a binding with photographer and came but always very shy

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Internet. I always search all materials on the internet. And if I do character which another cosplayer did, I prefer to ask him an advice and ask where he/she finds materials

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

I think it’s time and money.Cosplay needs to spend a lot of your time and money for material stuff, wigs, etc. If you think that to do cosplay is easy and cheap you don’t do good cosplay LOL

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Rely only on yourself

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Choose good materials and wigs. Yes, they are expensive but you will be very proud when you see perfect results

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

I live in a small Russian city and really don’t know the whole community but time goes on and of course changes is inevitable. See that cosplay level always rises and it’s very awesome!

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over ambitious cosplay you want to do?

Tracer from Overwatch *^* She’s my love

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

I usually spend from 100$- 400$ on cosplays.  It consists of costume and details.

What does cosplay mean to you?

It’s like freedom for me. Time when I can leave my problems and have some fun with friends. Because of cosplay, I have friends from many countries now and it’s fantastic!!!!

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Now I cosplay not so often because of money but I still like to do it. Maybe when I will not have so many emotions from the process will stop to do it.
