About Nagini Cosplay
Hey, I’m Ramona aka Nagini and I’m 25 years old! I’m living in Switzerland with my boyfriend and our cats and snakes in a beautiful house in a small village. I’ve always been creative and I made an apprenticeship as a photographer. I guess I always was a “geek”. When I was 10 years old I played Pokemon, with 13 I began to read mangas and with 15 years I got my personal Playstation 3! So gaming was always a part of my life and I love these fantastic worlds. I have a lot of interests and that’s why I love cosplay which combines all of it! I’m cosplaying now for 3 years and I cosplay everything from armor to sewed dresses.
How did you first get into cosplay?
10 yeara ago I have always bought a German magazine for Otakus where each month a cosplayer has been featured on a double page. I always loved it so much but I was too afraid to wear wigs or craft things since I was really bad at it. But 3 years ago I finally started my first project and since then I’m continuing 🙂
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
It all began for fun but I could imagine becoming a professional cosplayer since I love every part of this hobby.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I prefer to make them by myself but I’m doing everything from crafting to buying them it depends on how much time I have.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
This depends as well. If I’m making one by myself it’s normally several weeks because there are days where I work on it until 3 am or I don’t touch it for a week ? A cosplay is never finished for me because there is always something I want to update on them. I never counted the hours, to be honest.
What is your favorite cosplay you done so far?
I guess my favourite atm is my Zombie Harley Quinn. I love this character so much and to make a creepy version of it is exactly my style 😛
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My best experience as cosplayer was to make a group project as Eeveelutions and when we were at the Swiss ComicCon “Fantasy Basel” all the visitors were so stunned by us and we are even in the recap video of the organizer.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I love it but not every person is reliable which makes it heavy if the whole group counts on you. Actually, I planned a cosplay group for this spring with 11 other people!
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I am (again) working on my Classic Harley Quinn since I’m never satisfied with it haha. I also planned new characters like Ram from Re: Zero or Sailor Jupiter. Also, I really want to cosplay Widowmaker from Overwatch but I need to play it first.
What issues do you see being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I think it’s still the question if a bought cosplay is still cosplaying. In my mind, I clearly say yes. Cosplay means COSTUME PLAY so to wear a costume and play a character. If you buy it or make it by yourself is your decision and also a bought cosplay needs work like styling the wig, the makeup and putting your outfit together. Do what makes you happy because that’s the only thing that matters.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
From comics and anime. I like characters who I can identify with and where I like their outfit. I prefer dark characters over cute ones.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
To be honest I love all parts of cosplaying but I love to make photo shoots with my best friend because at this moment I really feel like the character I’m cosplaying and I always love the results!
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Local stores, the swiss cosplay shops “Cosplayschmiede” and “Mamike” and other online shops like Amazon or Aliexpress.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
To wear a wig. I always felt insecure about my face because it’s shape is not “perfect” or “cute” and I didn’t know anything about styling hair.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
That you need to keep trying if you want to succeed. You will always make faults but if you keep walking you’ll reach your goals!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Body shape, skin color, gender etc. doesn’t matter. Only that you’re enjoying it!
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
I think there are a lot of people who want to be “perfect” and famous. They forget the funny part about cosplay and are only trying to please everyone instead of themselves.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
Nightelf from World of Warcraft
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Never and I’m always broke because of that ?
What does cosplay mean to you?
It means being creative, get in touch with other people with the same interest and much more. I always loved being creative and cosplay combines everything from sewing to crafting to photography to molding and more!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
If I can’t afford it at all. At the moment I am really broke and I can’t make every cosplay I want and this really depresses me. I hope I don’t have to stop it.
