Hi I’m PI, I’m 22, live in New Zealand and have been chained to this hobby for 7 years now. I love doing over the top wigs and costumes with colour or sparkle, challenging myself to learn new things is half the fun for me. I have a bad habit of deciding to do a costume before thinking about the logistics of it. Currently I work as a barista but I don’t know what the future might hold for me.
How did you first get into cosplay?
A friend back in high school was trying to put together a Death Note group and she assigned me Misa. The group never happened but I got hooked.
How much time do you spend making your costumes?
This varies hugely depending on the costume, I can bang out a dress or simple fabric based costume in 5 hours or so but adding tricky, wigs, props or armour can take that to weeks. There are months at a time sometimes that if I’m not at work, I’m making cosplay or sleeping.
What’s your favorite cosplay you’ve done so far?
My Jolyne Cujoh (Stone Ocean, JJBA, volume 16 cover) cosplay, I love the design and colour scheme and Jolyne is one of my absolute favourite characters.
Do you usually get positive reactions from fans?
Very rarely do I get negative reactions, people do tell me I crossplay too much sometimes though!
What’s the next costume or event you’re preparing for?
Currently working on cosplays for Wellington Armageddon and SMASH! putting the final bits together on my Favaro Leone (Shingeki no Bahamut costume)
What characters inspire you the most?
Strong female characters. I do a lot of crossplay but ultimately I love cosplaying women or girls who are capable of getting stuff done or who become that way over the course of their series. the most.
What is your primary area of inspiration for your cosplay? Comics, anime, games or other?
Anime definitely. I’ve done 54 costumes and 49 of them have been from anime/manga.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
Anywhere and everywhere, I’ve cut up clothes from op shops for fabric before.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give new cosplayers?
Don’t run before you can walk but you can do whatever you set your mind to given time and experience.
What’s your golden rule of cosplay?
Chances are, it needs more hairspray.
What does your budget run per costume?
As with time, anywhere from $20 if I have most of the stuff I need laying about to $300 or so for more complex costumes. I think the total for a costume I just finished sits around $400 though so there are outliers.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Nope! I’d probably have a really hard time making costumes if I lost a hand but at that point, I’d probably commission or buy costumes, my life would be quite empty without it.
If money and time were no issue, what’s your number one over ambitious cosplay?
I’d say probably Hajime Ichinose’s Gatchaman suit, I have a few cosplays I’m working up to but that one’s certainly too much to even think about realistically doing as I am.
Why do you cosplay?
To throw my money down the drain! I cosplay because I love the characters I chose to cosplay and because I enjoy the often stressful process of putting everything together. It’s so rewarding to be at a con or shoot, knowing that the hours and money paid off.
