Arndt Von Koenigsmarck, Dokomi, Bloodelf WOW

How did you first get into cosplay?

I have a local Convention and went there yearly with friends.. at some point I wanted to be a part of this wonderful world.

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

I would definitely love it to be a side career at some point in my life.. but it still has time. I mean what would be more fun than doing what you love and making money with it. on the other side, I would be afraid to lose the passion if I do it for my daily bread.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I for myself make them from scratch but I also get help at some points from friends…I think either ways its right as long as you enjoy wearing it and feel great.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

It’s mostly about 2 to 5 months of work and I use every free minute I have when I’m motivated. I also try to allow myself breaks cause it’s important to let it all sit and breathe, be free and creative.

What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?

Diablo III Wizard by Wei Wang Artwork

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

My most memorable experience was the Polymanga in Switzerland… it showed me how positive cosplay can be and how lovely we all connect from different countries or places in this world… all just craving for the perfect art and friendships

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I’ve never been part of a group that actually made it to the end haha I mean group cosplay is adorable and I enjoy every aspect of cosplay if solo or in a group

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

I work on my Mizutsune from Monster Hunter and may start on Blackwatch Mccree. I didn’t plan a larger one for this year because there will be no cons for me and I wanna use the time and relax.

What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

Cosplay gets more and more political which is important cause politics are important… and since we all know there are different sides of politics… there can be different opinions on certain things. we have to listen and learn from people that call out problems that they are suffering from. some may not look like a problem from some perspective but that doesn’t mean that it’s not an issue. always listen and learn and be open.

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

I’m super into Asian themed characters cause I love the aesthetic of it. I would say the whole Diablo wizard concept is everything for me haha I could cosplay wizards my whole life.

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

I love the painting of my work cause for me it’s one of the most intense parts and I struggle hard sometimes… I have the feeling of there’s the biggest part I have to work on and I love it!

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

The amazing cosplay shop from Belgium of course and online fabric stores

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

I always wanted to feel like a star and held that back cause I thought it wouldn’t make people happy to channel that person I’m hiding inside but it actually broke out at some point and I love it.. cause as long as you are living it and feeling it… it’s authentic and you’ll find people that will love it.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

You don’t need anyone to be happy or do what you do.. you as yourself are the strongest and important part of that whole cosplay life you do.. the right people will come when its time

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Don’t let others tell you what you can do or cannot. (as long as you don’t hurt or insult anyone with it)

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

I’ve only been a part for about 3 years as a cosplayer myself but I think we all have become more open about many things. we are on a good way and everything became more positive

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

D.Va from Overwatch in her Mech. haha

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

No… it just costs what it costs… but when I see it gets a lot I try to save up for some things.

What does cosplay mean to you?

It means channeling your inner star and meet people that you are absolute incoming with its just love

How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?

More opened and positive cause we are on the way to that and I’m sure it will be better paid in some points in the future so that it can really become more a thing as a job

What is your favorite con to attend?

Connichi in Kassel

Arndt von Koenigsmarck – Overwatch Mercy at Epiccon

Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?

Kamui Cosplay, Kinpatsu Cosplay, Manlima Cosplay, Amenoo Atelier

Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?

We all have inspirational cosplayers and grow so I would say yes cause I always had role models and inspirations

What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?

Always ask for pictures… when you are in a crowd that takes pictures you can just do gesture… and don’t touch the cosplayers without asking.. its not a contact sport and has to to with respect

What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?

I always try to stay honest to myself and I always want them to knew that I’m real and authentic.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Yes sure if it doesn’t feel right anymore I would maybe stop.
