Shanny, Shannnwow_cosplay on Instagram. I am an actress for feature films or tv shows. I’ve been in lots. I am based out of Texas, I’m a country girl. I love meeting people and making new friends and movies and travel! I’m a gamer girl and I even Twitch. I own a bird named pickles!
How did you first get into cosplay?
I’m a film actress so I loved dressing up into new characters and so I decided to do that as a hobby.
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I do this just for fun.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
Hybrid. A lot of cosplays people request and cost a lot so people can purchase sets from my site and such to fund new cosplays. That’s all that money goes for is cosplays!
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
Oh it depends – some of the big, big ones like the monster hunter cosplays take weeks and weeks. The Darth Talon took weeks as well. And some like misty cosplay didn’t take long at all.
Hmm, that’s tough. The one I feel was really unique was my Cortana. I did a full body paint on it. It really turned it so well.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My most memorable experiences are honestly every day. I have a Discord with thousands and thousands and they chat and grew into such a friendly community of people who are from all walks of life and every day I chat with them and they brighten my day. The cosplay community is so amazing and wonderful. Such great people.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
I have no problems with it at all. I would love to do group cosplays but sadly I don’t have a lot of friends where I live that do this kind of Thing.
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I am doing a female Kratos, female Hellboy, I just finished 9 steampunk so there’s a lot of that coming, I’m also getting some really awesome league of legends cosplays going. I’m trying to make them all but might just get Caitlyn, Ahri, and Evelynn
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I think people who sell their cosplay sets… they are the most divisive. See I sell sets just to pay for more cosplay and only ask people to buy if they can afford it. Other girls charge people just to chat with them which I think is wrong and those girls also try to flag me for no reason on Instagram or send me messages of hate because I am so against putting anyone up higher than anyone else. We are all the same and all deserve to be friends. So I tell people if they want a friend to come over and say hi! I’ll be anyone’s friend!
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
Strong characters. I love dynamic ones. Ones who just pique my interest on an intellectual level.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
Definitely love wearing the cosplay. Meeting people. Interacting with others. It’s felt like too long since I’ve been out to actually see anyone but that’s what I love the most.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I normally just amazon for material, Home Depot, hobby lobby, or Etsy if I get desperate.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
The biggest obstacle is people who shame others. Not everyone can sow or craft cosplays perfectly. It’s just me and some times I’m doing this crafting for the first time like armor making out of foam. So when people criticize it really hurts. But I just pick up my head and keep on trucking.
Yes, I learned a lot about people. Meeting cosplayers all around the word online and in person. To look at the world and fear any groups of people is wrong because in this world Everyone is so nice and generous and lovely. There’s so much good in this world and so many unique people. Yes, I’ve come across some bad people, hateful, and such but I’ve seen so much good it’s overwhelming! I love this world of cosplay!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Don’t let people put down your cosplay. You can have Misty dressed up as Harley Quinn, it’s all fine. You don’t have to be accurate in any way! It’s fantasy and it’s yours!
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It’s become a business … the people who are super popular use it to just sell themselves and their ideals and such. I think that’s wrong. Don’t share your public views … don’t use it as a platform to taint it with views that may push others away. Cosplay is unified and accepts everyone. The moment you start making it about anything else will shun people out with different views.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I want to make armor, I want to make some that light up and glow and so much! Like do the mystique cosplay and or make working angel wings … there is so much I would do with unlimited funds!
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Depends. If I’m doing a big cosplay – yes! If I’m doing smaller like the Alita Battle Angel. I don’t really need to worry too much on a budget but most cosplays cost around 350 dollars in total. And that’s for the lower cosplays. It’s a fairly expensive hobby!
What does cosplay mean to you?
Unity and friendship.
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
Oh, I hope it stays the same and unsaturated with negativity.
What is your favorite con to attend?
Akon, anime fest.
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
Lol no not really.
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
“I love your outfit! May I take your picture ! “ that’s the way I do it!
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
I’m very very giving. I give away free DVDs of films I have been in, just gave away free posters, free sets, I just like to give to people!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
Hate from the community could drive me away from sharing my cosplay but I won’t stop cosplaying.
