About Tanya Bayer
My name is Tanya Bayer I’m 23 years old and I’m a cosplayer from Ukraine. I started cosplaying in 2016 and during this period I have more than 10 costumes made by myself and other little projects for Instagram.
How did you first get into cosplay?
I’m an anime lover since I was a child. And when I started discovering about cosplay ( I was 12 years old) I wanted to do something by myself, so I made my first cat ears and tail. And I loved it and I said to me: when I will grow up I want to do my own costumes!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
For now, cosplay is my hobby, but I hope that someday it will be my main work.
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I like to do them by myself.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It depends on the difficulty. 1-3 months.
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
For today I have two favorite cosplays made by me: Sindragosa from World Of Warcraft and Odogaron armor set from Monster Hunter World.
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
When I took first place in a cosplay competition.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
It’s an interesting experience that needs very good management and discipline to get a good result.
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
At this moment it is a secret that I will reveal later.
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
All that I can say about this is that people must discover more about cosplay because in my country most people don’t know about it.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I like characters that have an interesting history and beautiful (sometimes difficult) armor.
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I like the whole process because every part has interesting moments, but the best is attending the con with your finished costume.
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I like to buy worbla and EVA-foam in Craftshop, and other materials I always search in a local building store.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Not enough money. 🙂
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
That nothing is impossible! When I was dreaming about become a cosplayer I thought that this is something unreal that I never will be able to do! That I’m not talented enough and that this is so difficult! I had no idea how this works! But now I see that if I want something-nothing is impossible! Just believe in yourself do your best and never give up on your dreams!
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Start your cosplay today! And work on it every day without spending a lot of time! Leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today! I hate nights without sleeping because of the deadline of the Con.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
Yes, it’s changing, every year the community is growing and more people are discovering cosplay as a way to show your talents.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I want to do something that I never did before, someone very difficult, but I think that every costume that I’m working on is like a challenge for me, I like discovering new materials and new crafting methods and improve my skills.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
I’m trying to do it, but in reality, sometimes it doesn’t work because there are situations when I need some extra materials and at this point, I can’t control my budget.
What does cosplay mean to you?
Cosplay is making my life more interesting, also I meet a lot of talented people every year, many of them are my friends now, we can live in different parts of the world but cosplay is the reason why we go to those Cons every year and have fun there together!
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
I see it bigger and successful!
What is your favorite con to attend?
Kiev Comic-Con and Ukraine Comic-Con are my favorite Cons in my Country! I dream about attending BlizzCon someday and other international Cons!
Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?
Jessica Nigri is my inspiration! When I saw her Sindragosa I said: OMG! This is gorgeous! If she could do that I can do it too! And I started working on that costume! With the help of her tutorials, it was easier to craft!
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
I’m receiving emails sometimes from people that I inspired for cosplay and I really appreciate that! It’s a blessing knowing that my work is being useful for someone!
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
If you want to take pics with a cosplayer at a Con please ask about it, be polite! Never touch the costume without permission, you can break something and the person who worked on it so much time will be very sad and angry! Cosplayers are not items! Let’s be cute and treat each other with respect!
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
If you see me somewhere in real life don’t be afraid to talk to me and take a selfie I like meeting my dear followers!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
The end of the world.
