I am VivSai, a cosplayer, designer, and fabricator based out of Portland, OR. I have created stunning designs inspired by the worlds of comics, cartoons, games, and anime.
How did you first get into cosplay?
Stress relief from work
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
Just for fun
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I prefer to make it from scratch. However, there is cosplay that I have to buy, like some clothing pieces that I am unable to make them myself. I am not so great when it comes to sewing.
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
Depend on the project. Some take weeks and some take months
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
My original armor design of Lady Loki
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
When I cosplay as female Sesshomaru. A 5-year-old little girl run from the other side of the hallway yelling “Minimi Sesshomaru, wait for me” over and over. While her mom running after her and telling her to stop running. She did all of that just to get a hug from Sesshomaru.
How do you feel about group cosplays?
It is fun and it gives me a chance to learn from other Cosplayer
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
Empress Acina from Star Wars and Jessie from Final Fantasy 7 Remake
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
Telling other cosplayers not to cosplay the character they like or love because it doesn’t match their body type or skin color. If you love or like the characters go for it because cosplay to me should make you feel good about yourself.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
Villains, I have a thing for the dark characters LOL
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
The build is my most favorite part of cosplay. it is so relaxing for me
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I get worbla from cosplaysupplies.com and as for everything else I get it from Amazon (because I hate going shopping LOL) or the local craft store.
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
Pose for photos. It is one of the most stressful things for me. However, I learned that if you found the right photographer that you feel safe with and comfortable with, you can overcome it. Sometimes you learn new things from the photographer themselves.
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
The grass is not always greener on the other side. Everyone put on a big smile but behind closed doors, we all have things to deal with. That why we all should be kind to each other. Some people cosplay to get away or Some cosplay to be with the people who can understand them.
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Pick the character that puts a big smile on your face and make you feel comfortable. Never cosplay or wear anything at the Con that makes you feel uncomfortable or not feel good about yourself.
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
To me the community change from “look what I can make” to “let me help you”. It is a great feeling to know that I can go to anyone in the community and ask for help, and if the person I asked can’t help me. He/She would help me find someone who can.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
OMG! I do not have just one LOL I have a long list of it.
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
Yes, I do. Setting a budget is very important because it helps me plan on how to build the cosplay without overspending.
What does cosplay mean to you?
The world of fantasy come to life
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
I would like to see the community expand to become more inclusive. Everyone has something that they feel passionate about and they should be a community willing to welcome and accept them with open arms.
What is your favorite con to attend?
San Diego Comic-Con
Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
Not really LOL
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
Don’t be scared to come up to us. Just remember to ask permission for photos or hugs or even putting a hand on the shoulder (or any part of the body)
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
I love cars, fast cars. Besides going to cons I also love going to Formula Drift.
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
At this time I do not know what that would be.
