About Yanagi Cosplay

I’m Yanagi, cosplayer from Poland. I’m 19 yo. My first (let’s call it) cosplay was made in 2016, but I started to take care about details in 2018.

How did you first get into cosplay?

I was going to a convention and I’ve heard that people are making something which is called ‘cosplay’, so… I tried it too and totally loved it!

Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?

Just for fun, but hope to use my experience with cosplay in my future life.

Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?

I love sewing, but my sewing machine doesn’t love me, so mostly I buy cosplays.

How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?

Ohhhh, maaany of hours XD

What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?

If we are talking about cosplays I sew, it’s Lan Xichen from Mo Dao Zu Shi. If not, it’s definitely Hatsune Miku and Ashuramaru!

What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?

It was a big Mo Dao Zu Shi project, where participated sth about 14 ppl, then I sew my first cosplay and met many amazing people, including my best friend 🙂

How do you feel about group cosplays?

I love it, but only when people are trying their best and are active while taking part in the project. The skills are important too, everything should be perfectly done!

What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?

Maybe new version of Hatsune Miku, Alastor from Hazbin Hotel

What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?

I think it’s making cosplay more ‘sexy’. Imagine a character from your favourite cartoon you watched as a kid, but.. wearing only underwear, with a kinky pose. I don’t like sth like that >< people shouldn’t thinking about cosplay only as fanservice!!

What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?

Mostly powerful characters, maybe with a dark past, but this year I’m trying to do happier characters ^^

What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photoshoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?

I think it’s when I finally wear a cosplay and I’m happy with the result. Also, I love to organize projects, looking for ideas, and stylize wigs!

What are your best resources for cosplay materials?

Nope, I buy materials from a shop which is near to my house.

What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?

Being more self-confident.

Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?

Yeah, that I can’t trust everyone, should watch out when I’m making important decisions.

What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?

Cosplay is for fun, don’t listen to the haters!

How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?

Hmm, yes, a bit, for example now people starting cosplays when they are younger than in the past.

If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?

I’m not sure now, for sure there is a cosplay like that, but I must look for it in my memory..

Do you set a budget for each cosplay?

What does cosplay mean to you?

It’s a way to relax, learning makeup skills, accept myself more and of course a big fun!

How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?

I didn’t know this community 10 years ago.

What is your favorite con to attend?

Pyrkon and Japanicon, but this second one probably wouldn’t be organized next years.. 🙁

Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?

There are a lot of cosplayers, it depends on the characters I want to cosplay at the moment.

Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?

Some people told me I’m their inspiration, so… 🙂

What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?

NO. You should ask a cosplayer if you can make a photo of/with him. You should definitely have permission!

What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?

I’m not sure if there’s such a thing.

Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?

Probably not ^^
