About Yayachu Cosplay
I’m Giulia aka Yayachu Cosplay, a university student, and I’m 22 years old! I’m Italian and I started cosplaying in 2009/2010. I like dancing, singing and of course cosplaying.
How did you first get into cosplay?
When I was 14, a friend asked me to go with her to a convention and to cosplay with her! It was a fun experience and I couldn’t stop since then!
Do you cosplay just for fun or do you see it as a stepping stone to a future career?
I only cosplay for fun!
Do you prefer to make your cosplays from scratch, buy or commission them or a hybrid?
I feel more satisfied when I make a costume, but I buy my costumes sometimes ’cause I have to deal with university and work most of the time
How much time do you spend making each of your cosplays?
It takes me usually one month to make a costume, but it depends on the character and how hard the costume is to make
What is your favorite cosplay you have done so far?
I think Sakura Kinomoto (Card Captor Sakura) is my favorite one so far!
What has been your most memorable experience (good or bad) as a cosplayer?
My most memorable experience was when I did my first cosplay competition with a group in 2012 and we won! I was so nervous but also very excited
How do you feel about group cosplays?
It’s great, ’cause you are able to spend a great day with people who like the same stuff as you do and collect great memories
What cosplays are you currently working on or plan to finish this year?
I’m working on some Fate costumes such as Scathach and Rin (Archer Version)!
What issues do you see as being the most divisive in the cosplay community and how do you feel about it?
I think that some of the problems in the cosplay community are about how much skin you show wearing your costume and how people are gonna judge you for that. I think that everyone should do what they like and we should stop arguing about that.
What types of characters or genres inspire your cosplay the most?
I usually choose characters by how much I liked them when I played the game or watched the series because it’s easier for me to cosplay a character I feel connected with. Sometimes I just like a costume and I want to make it, but of course, I want to get to know the character too!
What is your favorite part (researching, shopping for supplies, sewing, photo shoots, attending cons, etc.) of your cosplay process?
I like to look for the right fabrics, but I also enjoy photoshoots a lot and I like to see the final result
What are your best resources for cosplay materials?
I usually buy fabrics and stuff like that in stores, but I can totally recommend Uniqso for cosplay contacts
What has been the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome as a cosplayer?
I think my biggest obstacle and fear has always been my weight and the thought that I was never skinny enough for a certain character. I still think about that, but I’m trying to accept myself for how I look
Have you learned any life lessons during your time as a cosplayer and what are they?
Never feel judged; I’m still trying to learn that, but it’s very important when you cosplay
What is your golden cosplay rule that you would share with new cosplayers?
Always be kind to others, because in this community there are people who might be very disrespectful but don’t let them ruin your day
How do you feel the cosplay community has changed over time?
It has changed a lot; back then, we didn’t think so much about how perfect we had to look or how many photoshoots we had to do. Nowadays, there are a lot of fights and “flames” especially on the internet, but it’s not what matters in the cosplay community. We can still enjoy a lot this hobby.
If money and time were not a factor, what is your number one over-ambitious cosplay you want to do?
I think a very big armor from Monster Hunter would be my number one over-ambitious cosplay I’d like to do
Do you set a budget for each cosplay?
No, I usually don’t!
What does cosplay mean to you?
Cosplay means staying with friends and taking a break from daily life. It helps me relax a lot, it’s very helpful.
How do you see the cosplay community 10 years from now?
I really can’t imagine that, but of course, there will be a lot of new people who would have joined the community.
What is your favorite con to attend?
Lucca Comics in Italy!
Is there another cosplayer who inspires you or is your role model?
Calssara inspires me a lot <3 She’s so talented!
Do you consider yourself an inspiration to other cosplayers?
I don’t think so, I’m a very common person
What advice would you give someone about meeting cosplayers and taking their pictures? How do you like to be approached?
Just don’t be inappropriate! I like when people don’t invade my personal space if I don’t know them. Just be kind and everything will be fine!
What is one thing you wish your fans knew about you?
I’m very insecure so please bear with me and my low self-esteem!
Is there anything that would make you stop cosplaying?
I think age and major responsibilities would make me stop cosplaying. Once I grow older, I think I will stop. We’ll see!
