After months of rumors and anticipation it seems that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Stephen Strange in the Doctor Strange film. Today is a good day in comic movie time, but are fans of Marvel as excited now that the rumors have stopped?
Besides Joaquin Phoenix, who was thought to be a shoe in to get the role of the good doctor, many others such as Jared Leto, Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, and others that did not get the role in the end. Yet, with someone like Cumberbatch it seems that joining the Marvel universe is a big, mainstream step. Sure, he has played Khan in Star Trek: Into the Darkness, The Necromancer and Smaug in The Hobbit, and Sherlock Holmes in BBC’s Sherlock, but Marvel is a whole other league.
Cumberbatch is also already well known throughout the world whereas a lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies have been taking risk with people that should not work in certain roles (Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer) and not to popular actors of their time (Chris Hemsworth as Thor). Though, Disney and Marvel have seem to know what they are doing, plus with Scott Derrickson’s style of horror, paranormal movies this combination so far is beginning to look interesting. For Dr. Stephen Strange is not the ordinary hero to begin with for he fights across magical dimensions, protects the Earth and realm from demons, sorcerers, and things that normal heroes cannot.
None of this confirmed OFFICIALLY as of yet, but fans can keep their fingers crossed to hear more solid news soon. Marvel still has to give the big yes to having Cumberbatch for the role or say no and start looking for someone all over again. However, with the film releasing on July 8th, 2016 in the USA, it seems that both if Cumberbatch does get the role then him and Derrickson have more than enough time to work out whatever must be done for the film. One thing is for sure and that is the Doctor Strange film will be magical and unlike the other Marvel films to date.
