DeVito in the Jungle?
Following the news that Awkwafina will be joining the cast of the Jumanji sequel, Sony has announced its recent casting development in the form of Danny DeVito. The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star will be joining the returning cast from the first movie for the sequel, starring alongside Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan. Director Jake Kasdan will also return to helm the project.
This marks DeVito’s return to a starring role in a feature film since The Lorax in 2012, playing the title character, The Lorax. But, not staying out of work, DeVito has spent the last twelve years starring on the hit sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Since the show wrapped up its thirteenth season during the fall programming schedule, it might mean that DeVito now has more time to work on projects such as Jumanji.
The original Jumanji, which released in December 1995, went on to make $262.8 million at the box office. The sequel, or reboot (however you wish to identify it), Jumanji: Into the Jungle, had a little more success, bringing in $962.1 million after its December 2017 release. And Zathura (you remember it was Jumanji but, you know, in space) only made $64.3 million. Not necessarily important to the DeVito news, but I saw the numbers and it made me chuckle ($64.3 million, in 2005!). But with the success of Into the Jungle, it seems Sony is willing to double down on making the sequel a fan favorite.
What We Know So Far
The plot and details for the upcoming movie have been a tightly kept secret. Only with the casting news coming to surface, an official synopsis has yet to be released. The setting of the game now takes place in a video game instead of a board game so it will be interesting to see how the writers are able to make take that tool and utilize it in the sequel.
But what do you think of DeVito joining the cast? Is there anyone else you would like to see cast? Did you enjoy the new Jumanji over the original? Would you rather that they make a Twins sequel? I know I would. But let us know what you think down below!
