Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na ELFMAN

It’s been a tumultuous month for the Justice League movie. First, Zack Snyder exited the movie to deal with a family tragedy and Joss Whedon took over the production. Then, the film entered three months of re-shoots. Now, Junkie XL is departing the film and Danny Elfman is stepping in to compose the score. Junkie XL is moving on to the upcoming Tomb Raider film starring Alicia Vikander. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Junkie XL said this:

“As my mentor Hans Zimmer told me — you haven’t made it in Hollywood as a composer until you get replaced on a project. So I guess I finally graduated this week. It pains me to leave the project, but a big thanks to Zack for asking me to be part of his vision, and I wish Danny, Joss, and Warner Bros all the best with Justice League.”

The statement raises a handful of interesting questions. First off, Junkie’s quote seems to imply the vision for Justice League is changing under the direction of Joss Whedon. This could mean the three months of re-shoots are more extensive than originally thought. On paper, a film as sprawling as Justice League needing three months of re-shoots doesn’t seem that unusual. After all, the actors have different schedules and it’s hard to get them all in the same spot for more than a day or two. But, on the heels of Geoff Johns’ recent statement about making the DC movies “fun,” it appears there’s more going on under the surface.

However, only time will tell. Maybe the vision on the screen is exactly Zack Snyder’s. But, maybe it’s not. At the end of the day, the fact that comic fans are getting a big budget Justice League film at all is cause for celebration. As far as Danny Elfman’s involvement is concerned, it seems like a great fit. Of course, the Oingo Boingo founder is no stranger to composing music for Batman. And Hans Zimmer composed new themes for Superman and Wonder Woman, so hearing him weave those in and out of the new music for the new heroes sounds like a blast.
