Darkseid Is…Ray Porter
Darkseid is…finally making his cinematic debut. The evil New God was long rumored to have been in Zack Snyder’s original cut of Justice League. However, the character was cut when Joss Whedon took over, presumably on WB executive’s orders. Veteran voice actor Ray Porter was cast in the part. Porter has been vocal in his defense of Snyder’s original vision. With WB announcing the Snyder Cut on HBO Max, it appears the Dark Lord of Apokolips will make his bow.
Porter On Justice League: TSC
In an interview with LightCast, Porter went into detail about what was planned and what is planned. “To be able to fully celebrate with everybody who has waited so long and worked so hard to see this film, I’m proud of it. I’m proud of having done this part, I’m proud to have worked with the people that I worked with, I’m proud to know Zack and Deborah, they’re two of the greatest people you would ever want to meet. I got to act with Ciarán Hinds, whaaat?”
Hinds played Steppenwolf, one of the evil New Gods and Darkseid’s general, in Justice League. Hinds is also the only member of the main cast of the film to openly condemn WB over the theatrical cut early on.
Porter went on that he’s still keeping his Darkseid voice a secret, per his NDA. “There’s been a lot of questions on Twitter today, ‘Can you do the voice?'” Porter said. “It’s like no, that’s not going to happen. Let’s wait until 2021. You’ll hear it when I hear it [laughs].”
The Dark Lord Of Apokolips
Darkseid, the evilest of the New Gods, was created by the legendary Jack Kirby when he jumped ship from Marvel to DC Comics. Darkseid rules over Apokolips, a hellish planet of fire and hate. He is also searching for the Anti-Life Formula, which would give him dominion over everything. First appearing in Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen as a mysterious figure, Darkseid has gone on to be the biggest villain in the DC Universe. He became so iconic early on, that Marvel ripped him off to create Thanos, who became the big villain for the first ten years of their cinematic universe.
Darkseid has appeared on television and direct to video animated films before, but never on the big screen. His most notable voice actors include Frank Welker on Superfriends, and Michael Ironside in the DC Animated Universe television shows, starting with Superman: The Animated Series. Michael-Leon Wooley voiced him for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice. Weird Al Yankovic did a more comedic take on Teen Titans Go!. Steve Blum and Tony Todd have voiced the evil entity in the more recent DC animated movies.
The Future Of Darkseid
While Porter is voicing the character for Zack Snyder’s original vision, it is unknown what the future holds. Even if the Snyder Cut overrides the theatrical release as the canonical version, it doesn’t mean things won’t change. Ava DuVernay and Tom King are currently hard at work on the New Gods film, where Darkseid is expected to be the villain and appear on the big screen for the first time. It is unclear whether Porter will reprise his role or if designs and stories will change in the interim.
