Dave Bautista to Star in Dune Reboot
Dave Bautista, the 49-year-old actor-and-wrestler, will appear in the Dune reboot, which is the sci-fi movie adaption of Frank Herbert’s classic novel of the same name.
Denis Villeneuve is directing the Dune reboot, whom Bautista has worked with, in 2017’s Blade Runner 2049.
According to Variety, it’s not currently known what role Bautista will take on.
Avengers: Infinity War stars Timothee Chalamet plays lead character Paul Atreides, while Rebecca Ferguson plays the character of Lady Jessica.
What is the Dune Reboot?
Legendary closed a deal with the Frank Herbert’s estate in 2016 for his famous novel. This grants the studio rights to both film and TV properties.
Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter will produce the Dune reboot. Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, and Kim Herbert serve as executive producers. Kevin J. Anderson will serve as creative consultant.
Set in the distant future, the Dune reboot follows Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. Jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families due to the planet’s valuable resources. The story explores a number of themes (politics, religion, etc.).
For those not completely in tune with Dune universe and its sci-fi cult following, much of the narrative appears similar to Star Wars. In fact, some would consider it as Star Wars for ‘adults.’
For instance, the planet of Dune is much like Tatooine. The Bene Gesserit order is almost like the Jedi Order. Not to mention both epic stories take place in galaxies far, far away. Dune takes place in the future.
The original 1984 film adaptation of Dune featured Francesca Annis as Jessica and Kyle MacLachlan as Paul. Most notable was Sir Patrick Stewart as Gurney Halleck. David Lynch also directed the film.
For the Dune reboot, Villeneuve had previously admitted that the film was like his “dream project.”
“Once I commit, I commit. When Legendary offered me to do ‘Dune,’ on a silver plate? Which was like my dream project that I’m dreaming to do for 30 years? I said yes right away.”
The 51-year-old filmmaker had previously revealed that he turned down Bond 25 to work on the Dune reboot. Villeneuve had been one of the names touted to direct the final 007 movies starring Daniel Craig. However, he said no to the spy blockbuster because he was “busy” getting ready to fulfill his dream of directing the Dune reboot.
Dune Reboot is Not Dave Bautista’s Only Project
Bautista has quite a busy 2019 ahead of him. With a handful of films that include the Fox comedy Stuber, the STX action comedy My Spy, and that whole Marvel Universe thing with Avengers: End Game, there’s a lot on his plate!
His recent films from last year included Escape Room 2: Hades and Avengers: Infinity War.
What do you think of this new addition? Are you looking forward to the new adaptation?
