DC Entertainment and, parent company, Warner Bros. have been feeding the rumor mill since the initial announcement of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fourteen months ago. It seems as if each day we are given another juicy rumor regarding the company’s ever expanding television and movie universes. Today, we were given such a nugget when Variety reported that David Ayer, whose Fury will hit theaters next month, is being eyed for to direct DC’s Suicide Squad.
A potential Suicide Squad film has, seemingly, been in the works for a while now, but it looks like it may be one of the nine upcoming films slated for the DC Cinematic Universe, much to the excitement of many fans.
The Suicide Squad, sometimes referred to as Task Force X, is a band of convicted villains who take on dangerous missions for the US government, usually under the command of Amanda Waller, in exchange for decreased sentences. The Squad has seen a variety of members make up its ranks including Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Bronze Tiger, and Joker’s Daughter. It was also featured in the second season of DC’s Arrow, where the team consisted of Deadshot, Shrapnel, Bronze Tiger, and Lyla Michaels — with a small cameo of the fan-favorite Harley Quinn. It is currently unknown as to which characters will be making up the team for the film.
According to Variety, “all the characters included in the film will most likely have an opportunity to cross-over between other DC properties and vice versa for non-Suicide Squad members appearing in this film.” This would obviously only pertain to the Cinematic Universe, not the separate television universe which, as mentioned above, already has its version of the Suicide Squad.
Ayer, who penned and directed End of Watch, would be working with a script written by Justin Marks, Street Fighter. At the moment, this is only a report and any details of the negotiations are unknown, but Ayer is said to have interest in the project.
