Swamp Thing Lumbers To Production

The upcoming James Wan produced Swamp Thing television series found its Dr. Alec Holland and Swamp Thing in two separate actors this week. Andy Bean is set to play Dr. Alec Holland and Derek Mears will play the titular Swamp Thing.

The Green Beckons

DC Universe is off to a strong start. It boasts a bevvy of goodies for any DC fan including back catalog series and movies along with current shows. Also, it is the exclusive home of Titans featuring a dark interpretation of the Teen Titans. In 2019, the comic book content platform ramps up their roster and their Swamp Thing series leads the charge. The show, based on the popular horror comic follows the exploits of biologist turned horror creature Alec Holland. While the character is very different from The Incredible Hulk, Swamp Thing touches on the same dual nature of human and monster and his physical transformation is no different. As such, two actors need to play the man and the monster. Fortunately, DC landed on the perfect folks to fill the dual role.

Two Sides Of The Same Coin

First, Andy Bean will portray Dr. Alec Holland. Bean, best known for his role on Power is a veteran character actor. Also, he stars in the upcoming It: Chapter Two as a grown up Stanley Uris. Furthermore, Derek Mears will play the hulking mass of vegetation. Mears drew praise for his portrayal of Jason Voorhees in the 2009 reboot of Friday The 13th. He’s also been featured in films such as Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. On a personal note to this writer, Mears is from my hometown, so it’s always great to see him pop up in high profile projects like Swamp Thing

The series is produced by horror maestro James Wan. DC Universe isn’t shying away from darker content on their platform, and Swamp Thing is a horror comic at its heart. In a statement, Wan said the series will be “gothic.” As such, one can only hope the series follows Alan Moore’s iconic run on the character, The Saga of the Swamp Thing. Of course, it is an outstanding arc for an underrated character and it’s nice to see Swamp Thing getting his due.
