Discord Will Refocus and Rebrand, Stepping Back From Its Gaming Roots
Discord began as a gaming-focused competitor to TeamSpeak and Skype, both voice chat platforms. But now, Discord will expand beyond gaming and cater to a more general audience. It is to be a place to host any kind of community you wish. Their new tag line is “Your place to talk.”
The Announcement From Discord
The founders of Discord announced via their blog that this change was taking place.
“Games are what brought many of you on the platform, and we’ll always be grateful for that,” they wrote. “As time passed, a lot of you realized, and vocalized, that you simply wanted a place designed to hang out and talk in the comfort of your own communities and friends. You wanted a place to have genuine conversations and spend quality time with people, whether catching up, learning something, or sharing ideas. A place where you and your world can truly belong.”
They went on to share the details of their growth and statistics, the way Discord has changed already, and their plans to keep Discord a safe space. The company is still adamant about keeping white supremacy and other forms of bigotry out of the platform. They began with the idea to make Discord a place that wasn’t about scrolling and algorithms and influencers. It’s a place to talk. For everyone.
As for new features, while voice chat, as well as instant message, have been its primary use for a while, the new update will include server video, which will allow for video chats outside of private groups.
Who Is Discord For?
Many people were under the impression that Discord is only for gamers. While the platform is very useful for gaming, it is useful for so much more. Here at Word of the Nerd, our staff uses Discord to communicate about the site and our articles. I have used it to connect with people from Tumblr who share my interests. I’ve even used the screen sharing feature to watch Twilight (don’t judge me) with my friends during the stay-at-home order. This rebranding is just the company acknowledging its varied uses, and reflecting that for a wider audience. I think it’s great, and can’t wait to see what else they have in store!
