Dragon’s Lair Movie Indiegogo Campaign

Who remembers playing this game when you were a kid?!?

I know that I personally spent hours on end at the arcade with Dirk the Daring on one of his many adventures in the classic arcade game Dragon’s Lair. This game was groundbreaking in the aspect that it was the first video game to move from pixelated graphics to actual animation by switching to a laserdisc format to overcome the storage issues that once limited their predecessors. The success of the game led it to be repackaged in a number of formats, and it had several sequals and spin-offs, including Escape from Singe’s Castle, Dragon’s Lair II: Time Warp, Dragon’s Lair III: The Curse of Mordread, and Dragon’s Lair 3D: Return to the Lair.

Around 1984-1985, thirteen half-hour episodes of the Dragon’s Lair cartoon series were aired on the ABC network from September 8, 1984, to April 27, 1985. (And then it was re-aired on the USA Cartoon Express in the late ’80s and the early ’90s.) A comic book miniseries based on the game was released by Crossgen Publishing in 2003.

Creators Don Bluth and Gary Goldman have come together once again to bring Dragon’s Lair to the next generation, in hopes to bring Dragon’s Lair: The Movie to the big screen. Bluth and Goldman are best known for previous collaborations such as The Secret of NIMH, Anastasia, An American Tail, All Dogs Go To Heaven, and The Land Before Time.

Back in October, a Kickstarter campaign was launched to create a pitch video for Dragon’s Lair: The Movie. However, the campaign was unsuccessful, only raising $241,579 of its original goal of $550,000. With obvious interest amongst fans, the campaign was relocated over to Indiegogo this week, shifting to fund the production of a four-minute video, or “Pitch Presentation. The pitch presentation will outline storyboarding (drawings that will hit the bullet points of what the movie will eventually be) and will also include one full minute of classical animation in full color by their team at Don Bluth Films, Inc.

The new campaign has a more modest goal of $250,000, of which over $195,000 has been raised in only seven days of being live. Campaign perks are quite desirable, from Don Bluth’s TOONTALK magazines in digital format, access to a studio blog with video updates on their progress, “Thank you” credit on the website, personalized “Thank you” postcards from Bluth and Goldman, and original story sketches from Dragon’s Lair: The Movie pitch presentation. Top backers (with a “Royalty” level donation of $10,000) will receive one full day visit to the production of Dragon’s Lair: The Movie, Pitch Presentation. Once there, you will be introduced to the team where you will participate in the production process including story discussion, art direction and animation. In addition, backers will attend an exclusive luncheon with Bluth and Goldman.

Help make Dragon’s Lair: The Movie a reality!
