After a rough turn of the century, it is safe to say that Disney Animation is back in full form. Their recent stint of films have been some of the best released in their given year (Tangled, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6). 2016 has already given us the exceptional Zootopia (read Word of the Nerd’s review here), and now all eyes are on Moana to see Disney’s first Polynesian princess.
A Great Filmmaking Team Behind ‘Moana’
At this point, anytime Disney announces a film we ought to pay attention. Once we saw the first teaser and all those who were involved, Moana quickly became one of the most anticipated of the year. The film is directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladin, The Princess and the Frog) and will feature original music by Lin-Manuel Miranda (fresh off Hamilton, which is on track to be the most successful musical ever). Though the young woman voicing Moana is unknown at this point (Aul’I Cravalho), the star power won’t be lacking with this one given that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson will be voicing Maui. Johnson has taken to social media to release a brand new poster for the movie:

Though it is just a still promotional image, this film looks absolutely breath-taking. There is something special going on with the animation, elevating it above its peers. The poster itself gives us a look at our two main characters while also highlighting the animals that will make up the supporting “cast” (looks very similar to the line-up from Tangled…that is a positive comparison btw). Whether it be the cute pig-sidekick, or the fact that the water has been split due to Maui’s magic, this poster is breathtaking and only serves to get us more excited for the film.
