Back in March, fan favorite actor Dwayne Johnson (wrestler turned actor) laid out that he and Warner Bros. had been in discussions for a long time about what DC Comics character he could play on the big screen. At the time, there was a lot of speculation on who it would be, with examples like Lobo or potentially the villain Black Adam being among the guesses. But now in an interview with Total Film, Johnson not only confirms that he’ll be playing a character but appears to say he’s playing Shazam.
“I will say this. There’s a character out there that we’re going to announce very soon that I’m going to play, and I’ll just say this: This character has the power of Superman, he can throw down. Just say the word. That’s all I’m going to say.”
If you recall back to the slate of DC Comics titles that popped up last month, a “Shazam!” solo film was said to follow the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for a July 2016 release date.
Dwayne Johnson has been making a lot of movies as of late, with the main focus usually being action movies, such as Fast & Furious 6. But with his most recent movie Hercules, he takes on a famous fictional character, and it seems like with this announcement of Shazam he may be headed in the direction of wanting to try out other famous characters. With his physique there are probably quite a few characters he could take on and be believable. But I am not sure he has the acting chops to do some of the more in depth characters, but that’s just my opinion. I guess we will see how he makes out with his upcoming movies.
And while I am unsure of his abilities, I will gibe him the benefit of the doubt, like with all DC casting news, because you never know how an actor will be until you see their performance. Just take Heath Ledger as the Joker and use that as a reference.
