Battlestar Galactica Soars Again
On Thursday, Dynamite Entertainment announced that they will be launching a new series of Battlestar Galactica comics. Unlike the previous comics and miniseries, which were set in the original show’s continuity, this will be set in the reboot series’ canon. The book, entitled Battlestar Galactica: Gods & Monsters, will be written by Karl Kesel (Hawk and Dove, The Adventures of Superman, Harley Quinn) and drawn by Alex Morgan. In a press release, Kesel said, “All the characters everyone loves are here – Sharon, Helo, Adama, Tigh, Roslin, D’anna, Apollo, and of course, Starbuck. And back on Caprica – Anders, Brother Cavil, and the rest of the Resistance fighters,Most importantly, we get to see Baltar go total ‘mad scientist’ and build a Cylon Centurion from battle-damaged parts.” Nerdist surmises that based on this press release, the comic would take place some time in season 2.
So Say We All
The original Battlestar Galactica, starring Dirk Benedict as the pilot Starbuck, debuted in 1978, riding on the coattails of Star Wars, and featured a rag tag group of human refugees from the “Twelve Colonies” on the titular spaceship searching for the planet Earth, a fabled “thirteenth colony”. The reason for their flight is the Cylons, cybernetic warriors aided by a human traitor, Baltar, has conquered the other colonies and utterly destroyed them. The show was cancelled after one season, and a sequel series was widely panned. The reboot series started as a series of movies and miniseries that later became a weekly series that ran from 2004 to 2009 and had a spin off series, Caprica, in 2010. The reboot series starred Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama and Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck, re-imagined as a female protagonist. In the reboot, the Cylons were changed to be human created cyborgs who went rogue, but were still in hot pursuit of the human survivors.
The new comic is set to release in November.
