Edge of Tomorrow Sequel Gets a Title
Doug Liman confirmed the title of the upcoming sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. The director also confirmed Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are reprising their roles, Collider reports.
Edge of Live Die Repeat?
Edge of Tomorrow is one of 2014’s most overlooked films. It came out at the height of summer movie season and featured Tom Cruise in the lead. The piece had “hit” written all over it. But, the film underperformed by Tom Cruise’s standards. The movie garnered rave reviews and those that saw it, loved it. However, most folks had the same reaction to people when talking about the film: “What is that?” Edge of Tomorrow had a strange marketing campaign.
During the course of its trailers, it advertised the tagline in huge letters that read LIVE. DIE. REPEAT. General audiences figured that was the name of the film. And for good reason. The film’s actual title appeared at the end of the trailer in a much smaller font. Furthermore, the movie is based off of the book All You Need is Kill. So fans of the book looked for that film to arrive in theaters. As a matter of fact, it was such a disaster that the studio basically re-titled the film for home release. Most DVD/Blu-Ray copies give the impression that the film is titled Live. Die. Repeat://Edge of Tomorrow.
Forutnately, the movie connected with home audiences and its fan base grew. And during an interview with Collider, director Doug Liman confirmed Edge of Tomorrow is getting a sequel. Not only that, the sequel is far enough in development to have a title. And the title is……Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Yes, it is a very silly name. However, it also lends a necessary brand consistency to the franchise. By leaning into the Live Die Repeat naming convention, audiences should recognize it as a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Also, Liman dropped a couple other bits of news about the sequel.
Live Die Rinse and Repeat
Liman confirmed the return of both Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise for the film. This bodes well for the production since both actors make a mint at the box office. He also shared a ton of enthusiasm about the project:
“We have an amazing story! It’s incredible! Way better than the first film, and I obviously loved the first film. It will be called Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Tom [Cruise] is excited about it, and Emily Blunt is excited about it. The big question is just when we’ll do it. But it’s not an if, it’s a when.”
So, it looks like full steam ahead on a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow. Sure, the necessity of an Edge of Tomorrow sequel deserves questioning. But, on the other hand, the original didn’t get a fair shake at the box office. And if the talent in front of and behind the camera deliver a quality product, who are we to complain?
