If there was an award for most casting rumors without confirmation, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would surely win. Names have been added to the list with regularity – including Jason Mamoa on two separate occasions – ever since the movie was announced last summer. The most recent actor to be linked to the film is Edge of Tomorrow‘s leading lady, Emily Blunt.
Blunt is rumored to be in talks with Snyder and Co. about portraying the sultry feline, Catwoman, and while most of us are excited at the idea of Blunt taking on the iconic role, there is hope that it would be for films taking place after BvS. With a movie that already has a plethora of DC Comics characters confirmed as well as so many A-listers, including Ben Affleck (Batman), Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Lawrence Fishburne (Perry White), and Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor), alongside some B-listers like Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), Jeremy Irons (Alfred), and Holly Hunter (Unknown), it’s hard for one to imagine that there is still room to squeeze in a major character such as Catwoman.
While there are plenty of rumors floating around, Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. have been extremely secretive about the film and the public is still very much in the dark regarding the plot. If Catwoman were to appear we would not have the slightest clue as to how big of a role she would play — we are still unsure how big of a role Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman will play.
The irony in the casting is that Blunt had originally been set to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2 and Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but she eventually dropped out, opening the door for Scarlett Johansson (and everyone thanks her for doing so). She was then approached by Marvel again when they wanted her to portray Agent Peggy Carter in Captain America, but she turned them down feeling it wasn’t the role for her at the time, and now they are making an Agent Peggy Carter television series. So if Blunt and DC do come to an agreement, it would seem that all three parties, plus the fans, would come out on top.
If this rumor turns out to be true, I do think that it would be a good move for Warner Bros. from a casting standpoint. Blunt is a beautiful and elegant woman who is proving that she can deliver in action movies as well.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set for release on May 6, 2016.
