Aquaman – King of the Christmas Box Office
Director James Wan has been promising that Aquaman would be epic. Today at San Diego Comic-Con, he and Warner Bros. released the trailer for this year’s most highly anticipated superhero film.
A live-action film about the King of the Seven Seas has always been problematic at best. The difficulty of working underwater presents challenges that directors and studios didn’t want to be involved with. And it doesn’t help that the character brings with it a certain preconceived notion and lots of stereotypes.
Coming off the failure of Justice League, Warner Bros. has a lot riding on the success of Aquaman. With the Wonder Woman sequel filming now and the trailer for Shazam! releasing a short time ago, Aquaman‘s trailer definitely lived up to the hype.
The film is being described as The Lord of the Rings underwater, which says a lot about the size and scope of the movie. The underwater action scenes look absolutely stunning. It appears that the studio learned their lessons from Justice League. Jason Momoa, coming off a strong performance in Justice League, proves he was the right choice to play Aquaman. He lends a balanced sense of humor to a kick-ass action hero.
What We Know
The story follows Aquaman’s origin fairly true to the comic books. Arthur Curry, the rightful heir to the throne of Atlantis, returns to take the throne from his evil half-brother Orm, who declares war on the surface world. It doesn’t appear to be much of a departure from the DC animated film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, however, minus the other Justice League characters.
Aquaman stars Jason Momoa (Arthur Curry/Aquaman), Amber Heard (Mera), Patrick Wilson (Orm/Ocean Master), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), Willem Dafoe (Vulko), Nicole Kidman (Queen Atlanna), Temuera Morrison, Ludi Lin and Dolph Lundgren. The film is due for US release on December 21.
