Fantastic Beasts 2 Trailer Brings Excitement
Everyone was talking about Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald well before Warner Brothers released the trailer on March 14. Most of the talk was of the controversy surrounding the choice to keep Johnny Depp as the title character Gellert Grindelwald, since Depp was facing accusations of domestic violence. Even more recently, J.K. Rowling received criticism because she revealed that the audience would not see Albus Dumbledore’s romantic relationship with Grindelwald on screen. Fans expressed disappointment all over social media for both choices. However, they appear to have united again upon the release of the trailer.
It opens on the familiar grounds of Hogwarts, where Dumbledore, played by Jude Law, is questioned about the whereabouts of Newt Scamander. The trailer shows us that Dumbledore and Scamander will be working together to take on Grindelwald, who is at large again, despite being captured at the end of the first film.
What Can We Expect?
Law seems to be a promising young Dumbledore. This movie takes place during the time he is the Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts. He seems to have the mysterious aspect of Dumbledore down. From the beginning, he vaguely implies a friendship with Scamander to what appear to be Ministry of Magic officers. Then he tells Scamander that it must be him who faces Grindelwald, as Dumbledore feels he cannot do it. It is probably because they had a romance when they were teenagers, as most fans know. This does stray from what we know in Harry Potter, since Dumbledore’s final showdown with Grindelwald is legendary. A small detail I noticed was that they chose to put him in a suit instead of robes. I found this interesting since we only see elderly Dumbledore in the traditional wizard attire.
The trailer also reminds us that the fan favorites will be returning. Obviously, Eddie Redmayne is back in the role of Newt Scamander. Katherine Waterson reprises her role as Tina Goldstein, as well as Alison Sudol playing her sister, Queenie. Dan Fogler is back as Jacob Kowalski, a personal favorite character of mine. Ezra Miller is still playing Credence Barebone. And of course, Johnny Depp is back as Gellert Grindelwald, although we only saw him briefly at the end of the first film.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
We get glimpses of the new faces in the trailer, but not a clear idea on who is who in the plot, so that should be interesting to watch. The second installment promises to be action-packed and mysterious, as they show shot after shot of Scamander and his friends hiding, running, and casting spells. The emotional appeal was in the form of a dark and intense rendition of the beloved Hedwig’s Theme.
I think the film will please Harry Potter fans, even though it faced scrutiny in the last year. Personally, I can’t wait to see this in November.
