Female Led King Kong Series In Development

Kong Roars Onto Television

With Kong: Skull Island being a monster hit in theaters, fans worldwide wait with anticipation for the great ape’s next appearance. They might not have to wait long. On Tuesday, MarVista Entertainment and IM Global Television announced King Kong Skull Island. This will be a television series taking place in the new Kong universe. According to Deadline, the new show is “a serialized, contemporary continuation of the classic with a female-led, multicultural ensemble that delves into the wonders and horrors of Skull Island and its origins.” The show will be written by Jonathan Penner and Stacy Title, best known for The Bye Bye Man.

The series already has high hopes from its producers. MarVista CEO Fernando Szew says “Jonathan and Stacy have taken a world that has enraptured audiences in all its many forms over the years and given it a contemporary, female-focused spin.” “There’s clearly a deep and abiding interest in this timeless story. We love Stacy and Jonathan’s approach to this adaptation and look forward to partnering with MarVista as we bring this gripping tale of survival and adventure to life for a new generation of Kong fans,” added IM Global TV president Mark Stern.

King Of Pop Culture

King Kong first roared onto the public consciousness in 1933 in Merian C. Cooper’s King Kong. The story of the giant ape and how “beauty killed the beast” (spoilers) thrilled audiences with the then state of the art special effects. A 1976 remake in present day New York City flopped, while Peter Jackson directed a 2005 remake to mixed reviews. The most recent relaunch of the franchise, this year’s Kong: Skull Island, has debuted to positive reviews and a healthy box office. There have been numerous sequels and tributes to the 1933 film as well as three television series, including one on Netflix. Kong is expected to return in 2020 in a battle with Godzilla in the aptly named Godzilla vs Kong.

Word of the Nerd will continue to keep an eye on this developing story.
