Final Trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes

Final Trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes

20th Century Fox released the final trailer for War for the Planet of the Apes The film is the third in the Planet of the Apes prequel trilogy.

The War of the Apes Begins

Planet of the Apes is an evergreen franchise. The original film is a meditative, philosophical sci-fi film. It presents indictments of religion, society, and the nature of humanity. As such, it is a mainstay franchise in many film buff forums. Also, this love of dissection for the properties led to a misguided attempt to remake the original film in 1998. Unfortunately, the end product didn’t land with audiences and opted to convolute the original’s simple twist. For Apes fans, the future of their beloved franchise looked dire. However, in 2011, 20th Century Fox rolled the dice on the Apes properties again. The result was Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The film was thought provoking and led many to re-discover their love of the franchise while bringing in new fans.

Against all odds, Rise connected with audiences, and the studio quickly greenlit a sequel. This time, Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves took the reigns and delivered on the newly invigorated storyline with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Dawn goes wide and deep into the franchise’s mythos and the result is astonishing. It was my favorite movie of 2014. Of course, fans chomped at the bit to see the trilogy rounded out. Fortunately, we are only 2 months out from the final chapter in Caesar’s story. And Fox released a final trailer to mark the occasion. Check it out below:

It All Leads to This

Immediately, the trailer delivers on the somber tone associated with this set of prequels. And that’s no small feat considering the world of talking simians it has to peddle. Humanity is reeling from the plague that ravaged them at the end of Rise. Naturally, they’re bitter that the apes rose up to fill in the gaps so readily. Following the second film’s events, Caesar maintains a complicated relationship with peace. He and his tribe are seeking solitude, but they’ve witnessed how cruel humanity can be to their kind.

War for the Planet of the Apes looks like a rare intellectual summer blockbuster. The depth of character Reeves created is on full display here, bolstered by great looking performances from Woody Harrelson and Andy Serkis. The studio pushed Serkis for an Oscar nomination in 2014, and it looks like they should here as well. Furthermore, the special effects are continually astonishing and provide the most realistic looking CGI creations this side of The Jungle Book. One hopes this film provides a satisfactory conclusion to Caesar’s reluctant rise.
