Back in October, it was revealed that Paul Reuben’s, as many know as the beloved character Pee Wee Herman, would have a guest starring role on the hit TV show, Gotham. The cast and crew returned to filming the second half of the second season in New York City this week. To commemorate the occasion, Gotham‘s executive producer, Danny Cannon, gave fans a first look at Reuben’s in character by posting a photo on his Twitter feed. Reubens is pictured alongside his TV son, Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor.
The younger Cobblepot had a tumultuous story arc with his mother, Gertrud Kapelput (played by Carol Kane), during the first half of the season. Gertrud was kidnapped and later killed by Cobblepot’s nemeses, Theo and Tabitha Galavan (played by James Frain and Jessica Lucas) in the seventh episode of the season, “Rise of the Villains: Mommy’s Little Monster”. Cobblepot was forced by the Galavans to work for him or else his mother would die. After Cobblepot performed the task at hand, Tabitha killed his mother anyways.
During the series thus far, Cobblepot has been known as quite the momma’s boy. Her death is sure to have a significant impact on Cobblepot during the rest of the season, as well as in building the foundation of the supervillian that is The Penguin.
In the DC Comics, Cobblepot’s father contracted pneumonia and died after being caught in a downpour. This caused Gertrud to become overprotective of her son, forcing him to always carry an umbrella, rain or shine, which has become an iconic characteristic of The Penguin. Because the role of Tucker Cobblepot varies from the DC verse, it is unclear what role the elder Cobblepot will plan in the story of The Penguin on Gotham. But from the looks of the photograph, it appears that his father is more dark and vengeful than his dear, sweet mother.
Reuben’s also played the father of the Penguin 23 years ago in the Tim Burton directed film, Batman Returns. That version of the supervillain The Penguin was played by Danny DeVito.
“Gotham” will return on Monday, February 29 with new episodes on FOX.
