Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Entertainment Weekly debuted the first look at Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla which starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olson. The site debuted the first couple images from the film, as well as quotes from the director Michael Dougherty.

The film will reportedly take place five years after the first. It will thus feature a world in which humanity is forced to react to Godzilla and all the implications of his existence.

Dougherty explained, “The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting, but there’s paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we’re threatened by others like his kind.”

The film will include several other monsters such as King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan.

“Rodan’s been kind of a sidekick character, but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. In a lot of ways he’s more powerful than Godzilla. He’s like this winged A-bomb. I think we’ve done him justice.” said Dougherty.

A Lead-Up to Godzilla vs. Kong

King of the Monsters’ human cast will include Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, and Kyle Chandler, alongside the return of Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins. This will be the third film in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse, following Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island. The next movie set in this universe is scheduled for 2020 and will be entitled Godzilla vs. Kong.

“It’s not like we’re bending over backwards to introduce Kong,” Dougherty said, “but there’s definitely some bread crumbs.”

There were two new images released with the article. The first depicts Dr. Emma Russell (Farmiga) and her daughter Madison (Brown) in what looks to be some kind of facility. This could possibly be related to humanity’s overreacting to Godzilla. The second image is of Godzilla himself, standing in the ocean and releasing his atomic breath into the night sky.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will appear next at Warner Brothers’ Comic-Con panel in Hall H on July 21st.
