Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly revealed the first still of actress Danai Gurira (Treme) as the warrior Michonne from The Walking Dead’s upcoming third season.
She already debuted in the show at the end of season two’s finale when she saved Andrea (Laurie Holden) from becoming zombie dinner in the woods. But Michonne spoke no lines, and we never even saw her face, completely, beneath the hood she had on. Michonne’s one of the most popular characters from the comics, so fans probably can’t wait to see her in action when the show’s third season starts this October.
Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comic and executive producer of the TV adaptation, told Entertainment Weekly that Gurira will embody Michonne appropriately, but there will be changes. “The essence of the character — her personality, her motives, everything that makes Michonne Michonne — remains intact from the comics,” he said. “But like a lot of things on the show, there will be little tweaks and differences here and there. We saw that her introduction is slightly different from how it was in the comic, and her interaction with Andrea is really going to be a really cool addition to the character that I think will get television viewers up to speed, and they’ll get to know her a lot faster than comic book readers did.”
Gurira impressed everyone when she auditioned.
“She kind of came in and really just blew us all away. She’s got incredible presence, and she’s got a theater background, and is very physical, and was just perfect for the role,” Kirkman said.
He teased how great the new prison location (which we saw at the end of season two) will look once season three begins. “It’s really creepy, really moody and it’s just gonna be really awesome,” he said.
With only one still having been released so far, it may be too early for us viewers to tell if Gurira will do the role justice, but she certainly has the look.
So… what does your gut tell you?
