It’s Been A Long Cruise Hasn’t It Sailor?
Do you feel the need? The need for speed? Well, next summer you can play with the boys…again. Today at the end of the Terminator: Dark Fate panel during SDCC, Tom Cruise himself appeared in Hall H to deliver the long-awaited trailer for Top Gun: Maverick.
Val Kilmer will reprise his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the sequel. Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman, Glen Powell, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Danny Ramirez, and Monica Barbaro. Fantastic Four star Miles Teller also stars. Teller will portray the son of Maverick’s former co-pilot and sidekick Goose played by Anthony Edwards.
The trailer is sure to bring back memories of 1986 when every woman alive wanted Cruise’s Maverick and every man wanted to be him. With the Ray-Ban sunglasses and the bomber jacket, Cruise picks up right where he left off. Although looking a little worse for wear, he still has the swagger.
There will be amazing flight sequences galore, new catchphrases to carry us into the next decade and even another shirtless volleyball game.
Joe Kosinski is directing the film, from a script by Peter Craig, Justin Marks, and Eric Warren Singer. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first movie with the late Don Simpson, will produce with Cruise and David Ellison.
The familiar F-14 Tomcats from the first film have now been replaced by F-18 Hornets. One thing to point out, at the end of the trailer is a single F-14 souring off into the distance.
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is now a captain and flight instructor struggling to stay useful in a modern military dependant on unmanned drones. But has he lost that lovin’ feeling?
The first Top Gun literally skyrocketed Tom Cruise to stardom along with co-stars Kilmer, Edwards and Kelly McGillis. On just a 15 million dollar budget, the original film was a tremendous success, grossing over 350 million worldwide.
