Forget About ‘Into Darkness’ With This Trailer for ‘Star Trek Beyond’

If there was ever a week to drop a trailer for a science fiction franchise, it would be this week. With Star Wars: The Force Awakens having its world premier on December 14 (with the theatrical release date being 12/18), audiences everywhere are looking to the geek side of Hollywood for more exciting movies. In the past week we’ve received trailers for some of 2016’s biggest films. There was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day: Resurgence, and now, Star Wars’ biggest friend/competitor has arrived to the trailer party.

Not only is this the week to drop a sci-fi trailer, this is the week to drop a sci-fi trailer with JJ Abrams’ name on it. Though he is not directing, Abrams and his company are looking give their rebooted Star Trek franchise some much-needed fun. Directed by Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 4-6), with a script from Doug Jung and Simon Pegg, Star Trek Beyond is here and it is certainly different from Into Darkness.

While there is some stuff we’ve come to expect from the rebooted franchise (attractive actors making fun quips, the Enterprise getting destroyed yet again), there is a huge dose of energy/fun that was sorely lacking from Into Darkness. With Benedict Cumberbatch monologuing Kirk “dying,” Into Darkness was much too serious for its own good. The problem wasn’t that it was serious, that has worked in the Star Trek of the past. The problem, like so many action films today, was it was trying so hard to be “dark” and “gritty,” not even trying to hide its Dark Knight influence.

If Into Darkness was hindered by influenced by The Dark Knight, then a similar comparison can be made to Beyond’s likeness to Guardians of the Galaxy. This minute and a half teaser is full speed the entire run time, and Marvel’s band of misfits had to have been a major influence on the new direction. It’s strange, and I’m not sure it will work for Star Trek, but it is nice seeing these characters having fun.

As written about before, Justin Lin is a real Trekkie and he is looking to take the crew on adventure like the Trek of old:

“As great as JJ’s films were, there’s still a lot to be mined from these characters. They haven’t really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn’t been touched on yet. That sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate.”

To be honest, that quote is NOWHERE to be seen in the trailer, so we know more is to be expected of the movie. This is definitely the trailer that was cut for Star Wars audiences to see this week, Paramount wants to get their product into as many people as possible. I’m still optimistic for Beyond. Idris Elba is playing a villain, there is a cool alien woman joining the adventure, they seem to be having fun, no one is going to yell “KAAAAAHHHNNN,” there is a lot to look forward to.

Star Trek Beyond will be released on July 22, 2016.
