Fortnite Takes the Crown from PUBG

A Battle Royale Between Battle Royales

The PUBG Corporation has some intense competition. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, once heralded as the most played video game in the world, has lost the top spot to Epic Games’ Fortnite. Last weekend, data showed a whopping 3.4 million players playing the cartoony battle royale, as opposed to PUBG’s 3.2 million. Those numbers could have gone higher. Due to the sheer number of players, the servers overloaded from the stress. While the developers work tirelessly to stabilize the issue, updates on the new valentine’s day event released to the public.

Fortnite vs. PUBG

In the meantime, PUBG may have peaked in popularity. According to data gathered from Steam, player count has decreased for the first time since inception. A number of possibilities allude to why. The graphical intensity of the game has run afoul of gamers before. Even on a higher-end PC, graphical glitches and other bugs abound. The move to XBOX has further complicated matters as the console struggles to accommodate. In contrast, Fortnite’s PC and PlayStation runs have been generally smooth. The art style demands less while also allowing for more versatility in player customization. It also helps that Epic Games has been very consistent with their updates. We mentioned in the previous update how Fortnite has slowly taken steps in creating its own identity. Consequently, Fortnite has seen a (relatively) stable PC and PlayStation release while PUBG struggles to keep pace. Not all is doom and gloom though. PUBG developers have rolled out a series of bug fixes to connectivity, as well as a massive crackdown on cheating

Suffice to say, the developers at PUBG refuse to bow down without a fight. With Fortnite adding more seasonal content, more and more players will find themselves drawn to the diversity. Can Fortnite keep the momentum strong? Only time will tell.
