20th Century Fox has purchased the pilot for the show Familiar and plans to develop the show, according to Deadline . The pilot for the show was written by Heather Regnier (Sleepy Hollow) and the show will be produced by 20th Century Fox and Temple Hill Entertainment.
What is Familiar about?:
Familiar is described as being: “set in 2029, the year A.I. Robotics will go the path of the personal computer – or so is the hope of the Wiercinskis, the family behind Luminary, the first mainstream consumer-oriented robotics company. The project follows the powerful and dysfunctional family as they navigate their own personal and familial relationships in an ever-changing world that they had a significant (if sometimes unethical) hand in shaping.”
This show is one of a number of recent projects that feature the concept of Artificial intelligence (AI). Other recent shows that have done this are the HBO’s Golden Globes nominated drama Westworld and CBS’ recently canceled procedural Person of Interest. It also seems like that Familiar may be a family-based drama as well, similar to Fox’s popular show Empire. These two factors are probably the main reasons why 20th Century Fox chose to pick up the show: Empire has arguably been the network’s greatest hit of late, and Westworld was one of the most recently nominated shows for the Golden Globes. Since 20th Century Fox has also worked with Heather Regnier before (when she wrote on the formerly popular show Sleepy Hollow), it is not surprising that the executives at 20th Century Fox decided to pick up this show. It will be interesting to see the choices 2oth Century Fox, Heather Regnier, and Familiar itself make, and what form the show takes.
Word of the Nerd will update on this upcoming show and other upcoming shows as more news develops.
