Frank Miller to Illustrate YA Lady of the Lake Prequel
According to io9, Frank Miller has joined a YA graphic novel. This graphic novel will be a prequel to the Arthurian myth. The prequel will focus on Nimue, or the Lady of the Lake. Thomas Wheeler will be writing the book, and Frank Miller will be illustrating it.
Frank Miller is best known for his The Dark Knight Returns miniseries, which was one of the first comics to really bring grimdark to the superhero genre. Over 30 years later, The Dark Knight Returns miniseries is still incredibly influential; the cynicism it brought to superheroes has not left. This history leaves media-savvy consumers with a pretty big question. Since Frank Miller is best known for being the father of grimdark, why would he work on a YA novel?
Frank Miller explained his choice to work on this project by saying:
“I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story—and by Nimue, in particular. It can be interpreted in any number of ways—from a delightful children’s story, as in The Sword in the Stone, to a terrifying interpretation like Excalibur. This tale represents an incredible opportunity and an exciting challenge for me as an illustrator, and I’m excited to collaborate on the story with Thomas Wheeler. I inherited a collection of antique children’s books from my mother, and I’ve always wanted to have a crack at it myself. This project is a dream come true.”
This book does not have a firm title as of yet. The tentative title for this upcoming YA graphic novel is Cursed, but that may still change. It is currently scheduled to be published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers next fall.
