Future Star Wars Monopoly to add Rey Game Piece

After generating so much controversy when Rey (played by Daisy Ridley), a major character from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (that just happens to be a female), was omitted from the recent Star Wars Monopoly Game, Hasbro just announced on Tuesday that they will include this favorite character in future productions of the game.

There has been great concern expressed by legions of Star Wars fans in the past couple of weeks since the original pressing of the game was released. Fans have been quite vocal about the under representation of Rey, as well as the elimination of other strong female characters in comic book and sci fi movies. It has been a trend to omit the female characters from toys and other merchandising, as apparent by the lack of Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy merchandising, and Black Widow from Avengers and other Marvel merchandising. Complaints even appeared on Twitter in the form of the hashtags #WheresRey and #WhereIsRey.

But the objection to the omission of Rey that got the most attention, even that of Hasbro, was a colorful letter penned by Annie Rose, an 8 year old Star Wars fan. Annie’s mother, Carrie Goldman, who is an award-winning author and speaker who has previously written about toys and gender issues, posted the letter on her Twitter account:

In response to Annie, Hasbro tweeted the following response:

In light of the #WheresRey movement, EW reached out to Hasbro recently to inquire about the omission. Hasbro spokesperson, Julie Duffy, said,

“The Star Wars: Monopoly game was released in September, months before the movie’s release, and Rey was not included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance.”

The spokesperson also mentioned that Rey is included in several other Hasbro games, including Hands Down, Guess Who, and the Star Wars Saga Edition Chess Set.

“Fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month, including 6-inch and 12-inch Rey action figures. We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines.”
