More Deadpool, More Deadpool!
We’ve all come to love and appreciate the Deadpool movies brought to us by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel released two incredibly entertaining movies in the franchise and fans are clamoring for a third. Donald Glover, A.K.A. Childish Gambino, A.K.A. Lando Calrissian, heard the cries of the people. He was trying to give them what they wanted: more Deadpool! With his brother Stephen, Glover was set to put out an animated version of Deadpool. It was set to appear on FX until it was pulled from the schedule back in March.
This decision caused Glover to lash out, rightfully so, on his personal Twitter account with some relatively sarcastic remarks. Along with his snide remarks about his not-so-busy schedule, Glover posted a script from the would-be show. Up until this point, Glover had a very positive relationship with FX. So why did they pull the show?
Why, FX, Why?!
John Landgraf, CEO of FX, finally provided an answer. All fingers pointed to Marvel as the culprit. “They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote,” Landgraf stated. “We would have done the show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them, as did Donald and Stephen.”
Based off of the small sample that Donald Glover had tweeted from his potential show, reasons for Marvel’s actions can be deduced. Glover is notoriously outspoken about racial tension in the United States, and that reflects in his writing. Marvel’s Deadpool tends to stay void of political commentary and focuses more on entertainment, rather than persuasion. Glover’s Deadpool appears to have been inching more toward a political platform, and apparently, Marvel didn’t want any part of that.
What is your opinion? Should Marvel allow Deadpool to become less neutral in the political realm? Or is the Marvel Cinematic Universe no place for politics? Comment below!
