New War of the Worlds Series In Production
Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern will lead the ensemble cast of the latest production and re-imagining of the classic H.G. Wells science fiction story, War of the Worlds. Byrne you might recognize from Hereditary and McGovern from Downton Abbey.
Among the ensemble are Léa Drucker of Le Bureau de Légendes, Natasha Little of Silent Witness, Daisy Edgar Jones of Cold Feet, Stéphane Caillard of Marseille, Adel Bencherif of The Prophet, Guillaume Gouix of The Returned. They are still casting for smaller roles.
War of the Worlds tells the story of a young man in Surrey as aliens invade southern England. It was originally published in 1898 (as a complete novel) and has since never been out of print. It has inspired countless adaptations across media like books, radio, television, and film.
In this adaptation is set in modern-day Europe. The story begins after the alien attack, where small groups of humans have gathered together. It will feel quite post-apocalyptic.
It Takes A Village
So many studios and companies are working to put this series together. Urban Myth TV will distribute the eight-part series. Each episode will be sixty minutes long.
However, AGC Television, Canal+, and Fox Networks Group are all co-financing and co-distributing the show. StudioCanal, a shareholder of Urban Myth, also helped foot the bill.
Howard Overman (from Misfits) is the creator and primary writer for the show. Gilles Coulier (of Cargo) is set to direct episodes one through four, and Richard Clark (of Versailles) is set to direct episodes five through eight. Also on the creative team are David Williamson (of De Dag) as director of photography and Richard Bullock (of Les Misérables) as production designer.
